Faulty Motor Car Purchased.

My wife has just bought a second hand car for £3,495 from a used car dealer in Bristol.

The day after taking possession, an independent mechanic told my wife that the car needed a new clutch and that the driver's seat rails were worn out and needed replacing.

I have contacted the dealer and asked them to rectify these faults but I have not received a reply yet.

What should my course of action be if they are not helpful?

First off be concerned that an indie mech told you that, why did he need to look at it? Second did you not test these things on the test drive? Third be reasonable with the supplying GGE if these things are true.

    1) The independent mechanic was my wife's son. She asked him to check it over after she bought it.

    2) My wife wouldn't know a clutch was slipping if it jumped up and bit her. I have now tried it and the car doesn't stall when in gear, engine running and clutch released.

    3) What's a "GGE" please?

Why didnt the son check the car before she bought it?

Did the dealer give any warranty period.?

Do you have any idea how difficult it is to get family members to do anything for you related to their trade?

    Yes. One month/1000 miles.

Without knowing your family we can only guess.

Well, you would really need to look at what the warranty covers.

A clutch is a consumable so maybe not.

    The runners, also probably not

    But good luck anyway.

Aww come on guys, why would you have any reason not to trust an Arther Daley car salesman who saw them coming.

OP sort of the wrong way round maybe should have checked it over before she bought it, if he is a dealer then you may get them to sort it out, but if it has got faults like that anyone that sells it is hardly going to be reputable.

At risk of moving this thread away from 20:20 hindsight criticism and on to the substance of the OP……

Generally, Sale of Goods requires merchantable quality, reasonably durable and faults to be repaired without cost or inconvenience to the buyer. There is also the possibility of rejection and full refund.
