Tesco, Sainsburys or Petplan - Thoughts please!

we got our dog insurance with Tesco. Picked their premium option which seems to cover a lot and was only about £13/month0

You do have to be careful with pet insurance, as a lot of the cheaper companies dont offer 'per condition, per year' cover - where if your animal develops an ongoing condition (e.g. diabetes) they will cover up to the stated insurance limit for that condition every year, and also if you make more than one claim in a year it will pay up to the stated insurance limit on each separate claim. There aren't that many that offer than (my cat is with NFU silver, which does, and I believe PetPlan is another), and they will be more expensive as the cover is greater.
This is what I don't understand about the all singing all dancing policys.
If god forbid, your pet gets a serious on-going condition, isn't it kinder to have them PTS, than subject them to years of on going medical treatment?
Isn't per insurance that covers a sudden emergency what people (& pets) really need?0 -
Is anyone on Petplan - do the premiums go up loads too as opposed to Tesco?DFD February 2012

We have just switched our dog to sainsbury's, just over £10 a month and that will pay up to £7500 per condition.
I also got £50 cashback through TopCashBack if it helps, makes it a bit cheaperVSP - £14.76 | Saving for a Deposit0 -

Thank-you. Did see the cashback, but read some reviews about them taking ages to pay out, which got me a little worried...DFD February 2012

I haven't heard any bad reviews about them, do know that they are part of AXA. Hopefully I'll never need to claim to find out, but better to be safe than sorry!VSP - £14.76 | Saving for a Deposit0

I was with petplan for 3 years but their premiums did increase alot over that time considering I never made a claim in that time. I switched this year to John lewis, better protection for less. Touch wood i never have to use it but its there if i ever need too.0

Now, if the animal cannot adjust to or easily tolerate the necessary management and finds it distressing, or deteriorates to the point where they have no quality of life, then yes, PTS becomes the only humane option (I speak as someone whose family dog was PTS because of cancer when he got to the stage where he didn't want to go for his beloved walks any more). But if they are OK both generally and with the treatment regime, then personally I'd hate to be in a position where the only reason I had to have my cat put down was not being able to afford for her to liveNever underestimate the power of the techno-geek...0 -
We switched insurers last May for our 7 year old cat. We went from Pinnacle to Sainsburys (the £7500 cover plan). Glad we did, as a couple of months after she was diagnosed with intestinal cancer and Sainsburys have been great. She has had all the tests she needs and courses of chemotherapy. Unfortunately she cannot be cured but she has been given a longer life and we feel we have attempted everything to help her.
Like others I always thought it would be for a one off emergency (car accident etc.) but I am glad we had the insurance to help her and extend her life. She is not in pain so our vet is loathe to put her down, so although she has lost an awful lot of weight, she is still having a nice life with us (she has fish cooked twice a day as its all she can stomach!) and we feel we have done everything we can.
I would never have thought about giving a cat chemo and would have felt it would have been better to put her down before it happened, but until you are in that situation, and the cat is otherwise happy, you don't know what you would do.:j Is MSE saving me money, or making me spend more on all the bargains?!:j0 -
Depends on the condition, there are plenty which can be managed with minimal stress to the animal. For example, a friend of mine has a cat who has developed diabetes. He's perfectly fine, just needs daily insulin injections, which my friend has been trained to do by the vet and he doesn't appear to find distressing in any way - if anything, he's gained new lease of life! With the insulin and a suitable diet he's got a good few years in him yet, same as a human diabetic
George my cat, we have not long found out has a heart mumor, which may or may not develope into something when he's older (he's only 3).
George finds the vet so stressful his heart races & he gets anxious. At home he's laid back & calm.
I guess I have George in mind when I think of on-going medical intervention - which George would find stressful.
As for tablets:eek:
I'm scared I'll break his jaw worming him:(
Thing is, he's so gentle, that no matter how stressed & scared he is, he won't fight when getting his pill:smileyhea0
