Poll: Gaming ethics

Hello,

I'm currently creating a project on Ethics in Video Games for a university project, it would be most appreciated if you could complete the poll for some of my primary research, also please feel free to add any comments which include your opinion on any aspect of ethics in gaming.

Thank you,
Jonathan.

Bad start; you've failed Communication 101.

    Link?

    <Edit> Ah! It's up there!
I'm dreaming of a white Christmas.
But, if the white runs out, I'll drink the red.

Ethics in video games? Usually the rules are built-in to the game - i.e. in a racing game you can't take a shortcut across the track without being penalised. So usually, if an action is permitted in the game, it would be considered an ethically valid move.

Obviously a game is not reality, so actions which may be unethical in real life (shooting someone without first identifying them as a threat) would not be considered unethical (or even poor gameplay).

Then there's the issue of sex/violence, and at what age it would be appropriate to first view such scenes. I think personal opinion is pretty irrelevant here (when legislating for the population as a whole): the law should reflect the findings of research into the effects of viewing depictions of sex/violence at certain ages.

Content is inappropriate. Games should have more sex, drugs and violence.

Content is appropriate, the disproportionate reporting on the negative effect of gaming however isn't!

i've yet to see a single documentary on video games which is valid & realistic.

I play COD, and spend my time on there shooting people from various parts of the globe (unless they're in Oz and the lag is a killer!) and throwing grenades around.

I don't take this into RL and shoot people or throw grenades around. We had enough of that round these parts before.

I also bought Assassin's Creed Brotherhood recently, and was mildy amused to see a full on sexual encounter in a cut scene. It isn't a real life depiction, and didn't make me want to rush out and have relations with the first female I saw.

Games are there for entertainment. They are an escape from RL for those of us with a hankering to have a bit of escapism. To those who feel that gaming is responsible for increased levels of violence, they need to focus on why people commit violence in the first place. I suspect it will come back to upbringing in some cases, and peer influence in others. I have grown up with gaming, right from a ZX81 to my current collection of electronics, and I can honestly say that I have never wanted to enact anything I have seen onscreen.

As to the ethical question surrounding gameplay. I have no problem with the way I play, but there are a significant number of people who like to moan if you don't play the game according to their rules. I suppose you could say that these were ethical issues.

Perhaps OP needs to narrow the scope of their query, or perhaps separate it into particular components?

Do I know you? I'm doing the same thing for one of my uni modules :/
  • bit of a vague question, as an adult I feel it is appropriate for me to play the games I do, though I won't allow my children to do so. By the same token I feel it is appropriate that I can chose to go to the pub and have a couple of pints, which I also don't allow my children to do.
Perhaps better question(s) might be appropriate? I have no problems pretending to shoot somebody (cod etc..), but cannot understand why you'd want to go for a virtual crap (sims), I maybe find that more distasteful than inappropriate..

My thoughts exactly. The question is so vague I cant possibly answer without me writing an essay on it
