Poll: Gaming ethics

  • The term Ethics seems to be a bit vague - are you speaking in terms of what you can and cant do as a character (if it's an RPG, is that your ethics fueling the characters?). In terms of MMOs - does that mean Ninja'looting someone else's gear - for selling for profit (again, that's the person behind the character). Would be interesting if you expanded it :-)

Re: The OP - I did a Psychology Degree and have a vested interest in Social Psychology within Gaming situations, which is why i was a bit probing with my response!

  • I'm afraid that your question's so vague that it really serves no purpose.

You need to define what you mean by 'content' and 'appropriate' far more clearly. That statement could mean many different things:

    Is it suitable for adults?
    Is it suitable for children?
    Is the material immature?
    Is the material objectionable?
Is the material likely to have psychological/physiological effects on the user?

I'm going to assume that you're aiming towards a piece that evaluates whether material is suitable for the audience that sees it? Again that's a bit vague as you need to define what viewpoint you're going to take i.e. where is the responsibility? Is it the developers who make the games, is it the ratings board who review it to make sure that it's acceptable for a particular audience, is it the store who stock and sell the games to the public or is it the public who purchase them?

  • I have yet to see a game with deplorable ethics, but its obviously subjective to my own ethical standards.

My mum use to say she didn't mind me watching 'mindless violence' (e.g. Die hard) because that's what it is. It's brainless, mindless bang bang boom fun. When the violence is purposeful and hateful, it's different.

Games have always been 'boom boom bang bang' violence. As long as no one releases 'virtual hurt a puppy' games then the world will be ok.

It wouldn't be a university assignment without it having a vague title!
  • Games should have more not good
