How to afford uni as a mature student?

Options
Hi,

I'm new to all this so please forgive me if there is already a post re. this (I didn't come across one before posting this though)

I'm looking to become a full time student doing a Paramedical course. I was just wondering what options there are available to me with regards to finance.

I live with my partner at the moment and average monthy outgoings (inc. rent/bills/car/necessity) come to about £700 each.

Any help/advice would be much appreciated

what else did you think there would be?
    no kids?
    some courses offer grants/bursaries
does the paramedic course have any funding?
  • I just wondered if anyone has been in or is in a similar situation. I wanted to get it straight in my head how much I could be entitled to beforehand.

    No kids, no.

Is it a degree course (BSc, BA)?
Is it funded by the NHS?
Have you ever had higher education funding before?

I think you have to do the leg work on this one as it appears you want to do something fairly specialist.

Try googling for information. Or approaching courses directly for info.
To be honest I wanted to do something quite specialist but as a mature student - I had to be eventually realistic and decided to do an Open University course instead.
  • It's a Foundation Degree Fd(Sc)

It say on the course details; 'Pre-registration healthcare students are funded by the NHS' but I can't look into this in detail because their website's down.

I've not had student funding before, no
  • Pearl123; I've emailed the university directly with regards to funding; just waiting on a reply. Hopefully they'll get back to me soon :o) I just thought I'd post on here also incase someone's going/gone through the same thing.

While you wait for a reply from the university you may want to have a look at the links below about funding for NHS courses

  • This was years ago so outdated but just wanted to say that my OH went to Uni at 29 as a mature student while we were living together and I was working a pretty basic paid job. It was tough but we survived his beat up car was rarely on the road as we couldn't afford it. He worked in the holidays at his old job when they'd have him and he got a twilight shift job at Asda term time. He worked really hard, got a good degree and immediately got a good job so it was worth it. Good Luck!

I'm 27 and in my first year at uni.

I get £6500 roughly a year in student loan and grant money.

I think you can do it, but you need a part time job where you can work flexible hours really. In the summer I get about 4-5 months off, so I'm going to try and cram in as much work as I can find..

    Good luck!

  • Thank you all very much for your replies.

MrsManda I will definitely look at these sites, thank you.

I have no worries about working during the holidays / when I can. Hopefully my current employer will take me on if / when they can too so that would be a real help.
