MSE News: Halifax to repay £500m to 300,000 mortgage holders

Well nice surprise - £195 cheque arrived this morning. I didnt think we qualified, as we were on a five year fix until end Jan 11, and we repaid it in mid March as we remortgaged elsewhere.
Made my day.
Do you mind if i ask for more details on this? It looks like you are saying that you were on a fixed from Jan 06 -> Jan 11 (5 year fixed), was it March 11 that you repaid? Seems odd that you would only get £195 unless your mortgage was really low?
I think I am obsessed with this whole thing now! I am still waiting to hear anything from them ...0 -

We initially borrowed £186K from Jan 06 on a five year fixed. Effectively we paid Feb and March 2011 on the SVR, before we moved to another lender.
From memory (paperwork upstairs) we were on a 4.79% rate. I need to check as I didnt think we would qualify at all as we only paid the SVR for 2 months. However something in the back of my mind is now wondering whether we had a small amount of the loan on SVR or something (although our payments never changed in five years).
We did have ERC charges of 5% sliding scale down to 1% over five years, I think. Although no penalty after the five years.
I thought that as we had only paid the SVR for two payments we would barely be entitled to anything.0 -
Just read through this thread, and can't see anyone who has now left Halifax but received a letter/payment.
Anyone? On the Halifax website Q&A it says they'll be writing to past customers from May, but at the top it says the process will be happening May/June, which I imagine has been edited due to it taking them longer than they thought.
So have any past customers yet been contacted? And is it worth my time ringing up to see if I'll be receiving anything...or will they just tell me to wait for a letter?
I had a tracker from roughly 06-09 and then SVR until last yr, so would expect some sort of letter even if it's to tell me I'm not eligble or something.
Thanks, L0 -
Read through it again;) - my post above states I have left Halifax. There are plenty of others, and there is a second smaller thread too
I would just wait for a letter, I didnt ring, mainly as I didnt think I would qualify.0 -

When i phoned up recently there was no record against my (now closed) account to mention that it had been reviewed. He said that he would flag the account to be checked, and if there was anything due to me they would get back to me in a couple of weeks. Reading between the lines i asked what would happen if i wasn't due anything, and he said that they i wouldn't receive a letter!!! So i suggested that it might be better if they told me one way or another by letter to save me repeatedly phoning up. Still waiting to hear, even though its only been about a week ...0 -
Thanks.
Yes I just phoned them up. The guy was very polite, said the no. is approaching 600,000 and seems to be getting bigger all the time (though this obv makes no sense it must be a fixed no. surely).
Anyway he flagged my account and said I'll get a response in 10-14 days. For anyone who hasn't received a letter, it seems it's worth a call just to try and speed yours up.
08457 273747 option 5 then option 1, and you'll go through to the people dealing w this specifically. They won't be able to tell you what you're due though (well not me anyway), but will flag your case up.0 -
Hi
I've just rung the Halifax after reading your post and asked them to flag up my account as I'm an ex-customer (Left in Jan 2011). Bloke on the phone looked at the part of my account that he could access - he couldn't see all of it as I'm an ex-customer(?) but doesn't think anyone has looked at it. He kept asking if I thought I fit the criteria - I thought they would tell me that.
So, I'm no further forward at all0 -

My only suggestion is just phone up again, you'll likely get someone different. Reading this thread it seems it varies as to how clued up they are.
I left last yr and he didn't say anything about not being able to see all my account, just flagged it up and promised response in 10-14 days. The fact they asked you if you were eligible is ridiculous. Remember also that whatever happens they should write to you by May/June unless it gets pushed back again.0 -

Many thanks:)
Just rung back and got a nice lady who explained that she couldn't check my account as it was closed, ex customers should have letters by end of May. If I haven't received one by second week of June ring them back and they can check my account then as it's too early to do now.0 -
got a letter saying goodwill payment £1980 nice
now phoned halifax and asked them to drop my monthly payments to 2.5% and was told the svr is 3.5% sir you cant have 2.5% i said the letter says the cap will continue not to apply to you .
He says well your the 1st person to ask for 2.5% i says that cant be right then he says the letter is a bit misleading!!!!

he says no no what i meant is
