My neighbour is complaining that my dogs barking during the day, so much so we've fell out about it.
My dog does bark occassionally, we've monitored it and have found the reason for the barks . . .
There is 5 cats within our area, at least 2 live next door but one, and like to come on to our yard. Some of the cats live with other dogs so do not mind the fact that our dog is barking
I know its pretty impossible to stop the cats coming over but any suggestions?

Can you close the curtains/put up nets so the dogs can't see the cats?

ah sorry - should of mentioned - dog doesnt bark in the house, its when we let him out to do his business (the cats tend to hide at top of the yard and i dont always notice them before i let him out)
Its when the dog is outside and cats are about0 -
All dogs bark, to a certain extent, it is unavoidable.
My three bark, but get told to pack it in if it gets out of hand, the periodic woof is tolerated.
However, i'm sure it is all a matter of perspective, if you don't have or perhaps like dogs, maybe are not tolerant of noises then barking dogs may seem an awful noise, that never ends.
I know it is hard to guage but could it be that your dog is barking when you go out? Some dogs may seem quiet but make a terrible racket when left alone, for many reasons.
Sorry you are having this trouble, hope you get it sorted!2 angels in heaven :A0 -
I can understand how your neighbour & yourself feels.Where I last live I worked nights & a new couple moved into the house next door. When they went to work they used to put both dogs out the back & they barked constantly from the minute they were put out to when they were took back in.As the place I was living was rented, the landlord wouldn't put in double glazing into the apartment & the dogs were literally feet away from my bedroom.
It got so bad that all the people in the apartment block complained & even the pub four doors away complained. (people were complaining that the dogs barking was 'ruining' the beer garden & they couldn't sit outside on nice days)
Anyway, someone,(according to the neighbors) from my block poisoned one of the dogs & my neighbor accused me of doing it & then in the same breath asked me to speak to the other tenants in my block on his behalf! My dad was there & he called the police who cautioned the neighbor against making unproven accusations.
Anyway,I moved out soon after as I got a housing exec apartment so I don't know how it ended.0 -
I would supervise time outside for now. You could also consider clicker training your dog to 'speak and 'quiet', the idea behind it is that if your dog is taught it correctly it shouldn't bark without being asked to. How do you usually react when he barks at the moment?
Maybe some kind of cat deterant too, a spray bottle of water (like the lucozade sport ones) if you see them lurking around? Not nice, but not cruel and should encourage them to keep away from your garden.0 -

It seems a bit odd to me that they are complaining to the extent you have fallen out if they are only barking when you let them out in the garden. How long are they out there?
If they are complaining because the dogs are barking for a few minutes a couple of times a day it is ridiculous but that seems odd to me.We don't stop playing because we grow old; We grow old because we stop playing.0 -
I agree with the above, it seems strange if you only let them out when you are around there shouldnt be much barking. If they are barking with you are around you need to train them to be quiet on command, if on the other hand you are leaving them outside whilst you are out, then they may be barking due to separation anxiety. This can be annoying to the neighbour. Espcially over long period.0

I love dogs, have two myself. However, I live opposite someone who breeds dogs and we are woken at 6.30 each morning by their barking. This continues sporadically through the day with the final "shout" being at around 1030pm. The noise is more noticeable in the summer (obviously as doors/windows open) and we cannot enjoy our time in the garden.
It can be really annoying, especially when you have trained your own dogs not to bark. I know that you are trying to get ideas on how to stop them and reward/clicker worked for us.
If your neighbours are already not on speaking terms I would be concerned with their next move being contacting the council regarding the noise.0 -
Get an electronic cat scarer to keep the cats out of the garden....
I agree it's annoying for the neighbour, I thank my lucky stars that no-one round here has a noisy dog, it would drive me to distraction. ( I know this because next door but one look after their DD's dog when she's on holiday, and it makes being outside less than pleasureable when it barks.;)Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19

Dog is outside during the day when im at work but doesnt bark unless someone/something is there (all other neighbours verify this)
He gets checked regulary by my mum who lives round the corner also. ATM my OH is at home (redundant) but im worried because obviously OH wont be at home forever. Neighbours kid used to tease my dog and neighbour has admitted throwing things at him so dog obviously doesnt like them being near him and will bark if they get too close
She once told me "i wouldnt mind if he barked, but he yaps!" - he's a jack russell lol i dont know a jack russel that doesnt yap
Neighbour fell out with me because i called her a liar
She told my landlord dog was barking "all day" this particular day, but it back fired because the landlord was around my house doing yearly checks that day and knows the dog wasnt barking lol She's also said my dog barks at night time (which is a lie) and she even heard him once when she had a migrane 0 even though we was in the lake district! (she must have good hearing)
It makes me laugh how she complains about my dog - but the two labbies over the road who are out ALL night and bark most of the night dont get a complaint
Other neighbours have confirmed my dog doesnt bark "unless someones about" - such as the window cleaner (who dog is getting used to) or if someone comes around the back/a cat
Have put a lock on my back gate to stop people coming over - window cleaner is making a fuss of the dog so he gets used to him and wont bark
But struggling to stop the cats lol0
