I have heard the cameras are going back on again in Oxfordshire, no surprise there it's easy money.

Yes I've heard that, but as local government finances them, and all the revenue goes directly to central government no real incentive for Oxfordshire CC to get them back on.

Ironically where the actual 20mph speed are in Oxford City the accident rate has gone up. Only if you include Oxfordshire as a whole do figures show a decrease. So yet again a spurious twisting of facts to suit.

If you opt to do a speed awareness course rather than take the points, the money goes to the local council.

Mysteriously, speed awareness courses are being offered to a lot more people these days.

I am sure that any correlation between these two facts is pure co-incidence. ;)

Possibly, but I am sure they have to be calibrated, and certified accurate at the speed being checked.

Say for example you're talking about a radar speed unit. Once it's calibrated it's calibrated. It doesn't matter what speed you're doing or the limit that it's enforcing; as long as the unit is calibrated as per the manf instructions then it can be used.

A typical hand held unit will be calibrated two ways - once externally (may be as simple as a tuning fork which will represent a set speed) and once internally to ensure that the unit is running correctly.

Because a radar uses the doppler effect it can measure +/- 1mph any speed that the vehicle is travelling at.

I heard that the Police were going to fund the Oxfordshire ones instead of the Council, to get them back up and running. I also read something a while ago now about the possibility of permenant SPECS (average) cameras being installed instead of humps in some 20 zones. Personally I think its a good idea - doesn't wreck anyone's suspension and emergency vehicles can go quicker if they need to.
