Oxford 20 limits produce 0.9mph reduction in mean speeds.

Just shows what a load of !!!!!!!! 20 limits are.
The majority already drive below the posted 30 limits where they think visibility and conditions requires more care. The remaining minority ignore the 20 limits like the existing limits.

I'd say it's the sudden stop that kills :rotfl:

On a serious note though, speed itself does not kill - it is the inappropiate use of speed that may kill.

Most of the sensible drivers out there are already aware of this and drive accordingly, the small minority who insist on driving down side streets at 30mph with cars parked both sides will never learn no matter how many draconian laws we introduce.
Remember kids, it's the volts that jolt and the mills that kill.

Absolutely true. Take 2 extremes. Firstly, the F1 racing drivers that crash at 200mph and more often than not walk away unscathed. 200 mph is perfectly OK on a racetrack, but not on a public road.

Then take the example of someone driving at 60mph on a motorway, in thick fog and an icy road - whilst within the speed limit, it would be downright dangerous.

They didn't reduce the limit for safety reasons, they reduced it so that it could earn revenue.... The Talivan's will arrive soon.......

Every road around here that had needless speed limit changes, had a visit from the Talivan very soon after. They even widened one road before reducing it from a 40 to a 30!

Whilst I agree regarding safety not being the only reason, I have heard there is no speed camera certified for 20mph available. Anyone know different?

^^ As far as im aware, the mobile traps can be "set" to any speed.... Because effectively they just measure/display the speed and allow the operator to determine whether a vehicle is over the localised limit.

They've had 20mph limits on most of the roads in Portsmouth for a while now.

Just mean that people who drove at 35-40, so 5-10 over the posted limit now drive 15-20 over.

I pulled from one 20mph to another 20mph road the other day. Looked both ways as you should, no cars approaching that I could possibly impede, and pulled out turning left. Next thing I know there's a k**b in a 3-series BMW comes hurtling past me..!! He must have been doing 60:mad:

Possibly, but I am sure they have to be calibrated, and certified accurate at the speed being checked.
