Cleaning a wedding dress..

  • I also washed mine in the machine and it came out perfect - mine had lots of beads and sequins on it - but if you do as the other poster said and put it inside a duvet cover it should be fine.
My MIL used to have a bridal shop and she hired out dresses - she used to machine wash them all without any problems. One tip though (if you do decide to keep it or it doesn't sell) is to wrap it in a white cotton bed sheet for storage as this prevents it from yellowing

May I ask what material it was? My cousin put her taffeta BM dress in the machine and it went limp

Mine was duchess satin, really heavy with a train and was heavily beaded on the bodice part.

I had to bung it all in, then sat on the floor and had kittens till it came out as new lol!

Have you tried just rubbing gently over the areas which need cleaning instead of cleaning the whole thing?

I would have done that but it would have taken me hours with mine having a train.

I have just jumped in and done it- it's in the machine as I am writing this-very nervous but at least this way I may be able to sell it, if it all goes horribly wrong I'll have to keep it but that's fine. I'll let you know if it comes out ok

It'll be fine, my sister was a carnival queen for years and all her wedding dresses went through the washing machine no trouble.

well it's out, there is loads of beading across bust that is all still intact, material seems fine-only thing is there are still stains may go over these with a cloth and put it in again if I have to!

I am such a slattern, it hung slightly grubby on the back of our door for about 4 years :o and then I bunged it in a box and put it in the loft as is :o

i did mine in the washing machine and it came out still stained :(
It snowed when we got married and i did a lot of walking around outside and had taken my shoes off so it was dragging around on filthy wet ground. As I am only 5ft I don't think it can really be sold on to someone shorter who could take the bottom few inches off so looks like i'm stuck with it, I have no storage space though so it's just been hanging up in my wardrobe along with all my normal clothes since december!

i paid for my daughters wedding dress to be dry cleaned - it was a dress with a beaded bodice and a full lenth coat over. the cleaner charged for 2 items and it totalled £120!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

came back stored properly in a proper bridal dress storage bag and box.

at that price is should have come back wrapped in gold leaf!!!!!
