If the stitching at the seam is coming away rather than the fabric fraying then it would be quite simple to repair it by hand. I'm no seamstress but I'd probably be able to have a fair stab at it with a running stitch.

What fabric is it? I'd have a go at removing the marks with a dilute solution of laundry detergent and spot-clean it rather than washing the whole thing.

It says its a satin look fabric so not really sure what that means tbh. So would you just mix up some washing powder with water to clean it?

    Hi Tiggyroo:j

Just for info , I deleted your duplicate wedding dress thread :)

There is a previous thread about cleaning wedding dress - you may see some ideas in there. I h ope youare able to get a family member to sew it for you - either way you have still saved a small fortune

There is also - advice on handwashing wedding dress

I hope you are able to get it sorted out :) I'll merge this with the first link later

    thanks

It sounds like it might be a synthetic fabric so I'd spot-clean it with a sponge on a flat surface with an old (light-coloured!) towel underneath it and see if that shifts the marks

You could maybe try posting your query on the Special occasions thread, on the brides bit at the top ? Or maybe zippy could move it ?

I`m sure I read somewhere on there that someone had washed a wedding dress in a duvet cover in the washing machine.
I washed my daughter`s one in the bath with Lux flakes - came out like new.
Hope you can get it fixed.

I have washed lots of brides and bridesmaid dresses without any problem. I use a mild clothes washing liquid, and put some neat liquid onto any stains or marks and then wash in hand hot water in the bath. Make sure all the dress is in and agitate gently for about 10 mins (murder on the back I must admit). Take the plug out and let the water run away and refill with refresh warm water, agitate again and keep repeating until no more soap suds out come. Put a couple of BIG Bath towels on the floor and lay dress on them and then roll up (like a swiss roll). This takes the majority of the water out and then hang up somewhere high to dry. In the winter I hang them on the edge of the shower cabinet and in the warmer weather I hang them outside (in my case on a old swing frame). It will need some ironing, but surprisingly little, however, if you can't face it then you can get them just ironed at a dry cleaners for approx £10

I must stress however, all the dresses I have done have all been synthetic materials I've not done real silk.

Try using a babywipe to remove any marks on the dress. They usually work very well on marks on synthetic satin which your dress probably is but check the label first.
