Quiet beaches include Will Rogers, busy lively beaches include Venice and Santa Monic. Ultra quite; there are beaches on Lake Mead.

A good place to stay for an overnight, when driving from Las Vegas, is Palm Springs.
The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark

If you can get up further north to Carmel, there is a great beach there, it is just at the end of a road, park and walk on to the beach.

  • I did the same trip you did but in reverse in the Summer- I went to LA, then LV and finished off in SanFran.

Didnt hire a car, and it wasnt too much of a hassle, in fact it was more of an experience.

When in LA we went to San Diego for the day and took the Greyhound there which was more fun than driving, you saw more of the real america.

LA- the only thing we missed out on was going to the place where you get a good view of the Hollywood sign, cant remember its name! But other than that, went to the beaches, walk of fame etc etc.

LV- see no reason to hire a car there at all, unless you want to go to the Hoover Dam/Grand Canyon, we stayed there for 5 nights and didnt have time to do that, we had too much fun just in LV!!

You're not going to SanFran so no point going into detail but no car was needed there either.

American public transport gets an awful write up but I have been all over America without a car and have coped just fine! (Miami being the only place where public transport was truly awful).

We paid £1500 each for flights from LHR-LA, LA-LV, LV-SF, SF-LHR and our hotel accomodation...

Thanks for this. At the moment I have it at about £800 each without LA hotel.

I was literally planning on driving from LV to LA and maybe divert (a big divert) to Grand Canyon along the way, but I have seen it before, the others don't seem that keen, but it was just an idea.

Original idea was to go to San Francisco after (so do a V shape), but there isn't much my friends want to see (and I've been before, although saying that I've been to LA and LV before :p), so I scrapped that.

How did you get from LA to LV can I ask? (or did you go on GH with this as well?)

I think ''coped'' is the operative word.

Doing a city like LA on foot makes things that much harder and can only restrict your movements in comparison to having a car. In June it's going to be 35 degrees and between 4 people the cost of car hire and petrol really isn't going to be that much more than 4 x bus fares.

We actually flew from LA to LV! It was the shortest flight ever! Took off, the flight attendants pushed the trolley up, served us a coke, and then we were in LV! It was so strange!! They never took the seatbelt sign off and i was dying for the toilet so risked life and limb to go! haha

    Where you staying in LV?

i loved SanFran whereas my friend hated it, after LV it was a big comedown, but i enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere

Hardly, it was something like $1 a day on the bus, we went in August so was even hotter than that.

I am just saying there is a viable, cheaper option than driving.

I will be staying at Flamingo, not sure where in LA yet but somewhere near Manhatten Beach and LAX most probably. LA is quite expensive for any half decent hotel it seems!

If I were to drive I'd also have to pick somewhere with free carparking, I imagine if I don't it'll be incredibly expensive.

Car hire would be approximately £500 altogether. (with a decent size car and young person surcharge)

This is the LA cheapo one I have been seriously considering given the reviews

Cool- we stayed in Circus Circus which we loved, although mainly because we were drunk for 90% of the time and only used it to sleep there :o drink is cheap at Circus Circus too!!

Would not reccomend where we stayed in LA so no help there- just AVOID the Mayfair hotel!!!
