Unreasonable neighbour says we're making noise - we're not!

How many of you are their and what ages!
I think using a noisy party as a benchmark for noisiness is not necessarily reasonable.

Running, slamming doors, bickering could be a constant she hears, you need to speak to her.

As others said speak to them why not put your TV on at a Normal volume (no sneaky turning it down) go to their flat and as see how loud it sounds. There is nothing worse than neighbour conflicts so do everything to communicate well with them even if yoyu think they are being unreasonable.

Just go and speak to them, say you need to get to the bottom of this noise issue, and can you listen to the noise levels yourself from their flat.

Perhaps the wife can even get in your bed with your OH (obviously just to talk!) so you can see if they can hear every word you're saying!?!

If you're making effort not to be unreasonable, and it gets you nowhere, tehn personally I'd ignore it. If they start banging, turn your telly up to compensate.

Sounds like you're not being unreasonable with the amount of noise you're making. I would do what someone said above and see if you can pop over to find out for yourself how loud it sounds from her side.

Personally I would probably be planning to move, complaining neighbour or not. The thought of neighbours being able to hear me and my partner chatting in bed is :eek: I'd be needing more privacy than that!

The couple upstairs from us argue in bed quite loudly. I have never met them as far as I know (our block is odds and evens lifts) - but they have heard me with a loud "!!!!!!" more than once, they do stop then.
Before them there was a partly deaf old lady and I just learned to put up with her loud telly, she was a nice old dear so she deserved a bit of leeway.

I would definitely try this. I had a neighbour who constantly complained about my noise. I put my TV on at the normal volume I would listen to and went to her flat. All I could hear from a flat was a faint background noise. I couldn't have even guessed what sort of programme was on. She complained about another neighbour hoovering and he did the same thing. Again, all he could hear was a distant humming noise. He said it was at a level that most people could block out without any effort. I think she was just sensitive to noise and also had unrealistic expectations about what noise levels are like in flats. We got the people who managed the flats to have a chat to her and point out that there aren't many flats that are completely silent. If you are also in flats I wonder whether there is someone in a similar position who might be prepared to have a chat with this neighbour?

I once lived next door to a seemingly normal middle-aged couple. I could hear just about every sound the bloke made including:
sneezing
farting
coughing

Everything he did was done with extraordinary "gusto".


I knew when he had been drinking (slurred speech). I knew when he had been eating (loud belching). I knew dates of birthdays and anniversaries. I even knew his credit card number - he bought a lot over the phone. The curious thing is, I have lived in a block of flats with residents above, below and either side of me, and never once been disturbed.

Back to loud-mouthed neighbour.....my friend has a theory which might just have something in it - vertically challenged people tend to have big mouths. This certainly applies to my former neighbour. Several over-opinionated shorties throughout history who had rather a lot to say for themselves as well (1939-45).
