Flights go up in pice after May/June?

I'm looking at flights from London to New York around July time, and flights just now seem ridiculously expensive (£500+) with that price remaining the same sort of level until at least next February. However, flights to New York are £300 or below from now until around May, with direct flights in May starting at £285.

Why are flights SO expensive from June onwards? Is it simply that it's the summer season, or are prices likely to fall nearer the time?

I'm confused why the prices don't come back down again towards the end of the year and into 2012? Surely if the prices are so high over the summer purely because it's the summer, the price over autumn/winter should fall again?

Summer holiday (July/August) = peak season, higher demand = higher prices.

They haven't put the cheaper booking classes on sale yet, they ain't worried at the moment about filling planes in November.

So would you advise anyone wishing to travel in say October and currently facing bonkers £500+ economy tickets to New York to simply wait?

I personally would, however that doesn't mean you should.

If it's a traditionally quiet month (Feb/May/Early June/Oct/Nov) and I was sure there were no 'big' events (trade shows, NY Marathon) and I had a degree of flexibility (even to be able to go a day / week later) I would be confident of getting circa £350 non-stop to NY in October from Heathrow direct.

Have you had a look at prices for Virgin? As they seem to be at least £400 cheaper than Ba for bookings in April. Might be the same for the dates you want?
