New Router disconnects when I start webcam problem.

Hello techies! Hope someone here can help me solve this niggly problem:

Just set up new adsl router - it's a Thompson Speedtouch 585 v6 wireless router. I'm connected to my pc by ethernet and the connection itself is fine.

I've disabled wireless as not needed at the moment.

The problem is, whenever I use my webcam (a Logitech Sphere/Orbit) in either Yahoo or MSN/Windows live messenger..I get disconnected from the internet and I've no idea why??? The webcam worked fine using dial up and when my line was broadband enabled I was using an old usb adsl modem and the webcam worked fine using that.

Then yesterday the new Speedtouch arrived yesterday so I installed and set up..and the webcam/router conflict began!

Any ideas/suggestions please would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advcance,

Dan.

  • when you get disconnected, can you ping the routers ip address, can you ping https://www.google.com.

Ie is it the connection between your router and the internet that is failing or your pc and the router?

No, I get a "page cannot be found" and have to run the XP Network diagnostics tool on the IE7 to re establish connection.
  • is everything unticked in ie, tools, internet options, connections, lan settings?

    try
    start, run, cmd
    ping -t https://www.google.com

then connect the webcam, and report back what happens with the pings.

  • Thanks for your reply Albertross.

In my Lan settings "automatically detect settings" is the only option that IS ticked - is that ok?

Ran that ping...and it kept on pinging until I closed the commad prompt.

Will try webcam in yahoo now and see what happens.
  • try removing the tick.

I wanted you to see if the ping failed when you put the webcam in btw

  • Unticked the lan "auto detect settings" option, fired up yahoo then webcam and did the ping - it worked for 2 or 3 minutes then connection dropped again.

  • ok, strange..

could you do the same test again, but ping the routers ip address instead of google

if you don't know the address it, it will be the number next to default gateway, when you do a

    start, run, cmd
    ipconfig

  • Not sure what the routers Ip is? Is it 192.168.0.1 ?? Because the way I get into the router configuration screen is http//speedtouch.lan/
  • try ipconfig look for the gateway address, it's probably 192.168.1.254

If you can see the flashing network lights in the taskbar, double click on that, and look on the support tab, that'll show you the default gateway, other than that you can ping http://speedtouch.lan/ and your pc should resolve it to the ip address, but 192.168.0.1 is about.
