Thank you ladies...it's in the slow cooker to "do" overnight...then I think I might freeze it for next week when I know I'll be short of time.
I know I can't reheat meat dishes in slow cooker, so how should I re-heat and for how long please?
Oh yes - and should I strip the meat from the bones or servie it as it is? sorry to sound dim...been a loooooooooooooooong day!0 -
I should think 30-40 mins at about 180 c will reheat it.
I don't strip the meat off, the children like sucking on the bonesIt's more to do anyway.

Yesterday I got adventurous (well, adventurous for me!) and ordered an oxtail from our local beef farmer
They only slaughter one cow a month, and apparently she was looking forward to eating it .... until I came along to purchase it!
Now, apart from oxtail soup, what can I do with it? She said it was good cooked with red wine ... perhaps some kind of SC casserole?
Any more ideas folks?GC - March 2024 -0 -
How much are you paying for the oxtail? ive always wanted to try it, might go to the butchers tomorrow and get some, but would like to know how much i should expect to pay!!!!0

I coat it in a little seasoned flour and fry with onion and garlic. this gives it extra flavour. Then pop it in the slow cooker with onion, carrots, parsnip, red wine, beef stock and some herbs. Leave until it is falling off the bone. Sometimes i need to boil it rapidly on the hob to thicken the sauce a bit. Serve with buttery champ and savoy cabbage. Yum.0

This is going to sound bad .... I don't know!
I'm buying a lot of meat from her, and she is charging a flat rate of £3 per pound of beef, and I don't know how heavy the tail is!!!GC - March 2024 -0 -
Current rate for oxtail is around £4.79 a kilo in the supermarkets to around £5.00 a kilo at a butcher. I usually get mine at the butcher but thought I would try the supermarket for a change, got some at Morrisons the other day.“Ordinary riches can be stolen, real riches cannot. I'd like to share this dutch* recipe for clear oxtail soup with madeira. It is nothing like the heavy thick Heinz-type oxtail soup. This one is very light, thin, and delicious.
50g bacon
15g butter
750g oxtail cut into pieces
1 onion roughly chopped
1 leek sliced
2 small carrots sliced
2 tomatoes quartered
pinch thyme
bayleaf
1.5 litres cold water
5 peppercorns
1 tbsp salt
freshly ground pepper
dash of madeira
Fry the bacon in the butter until crisp, then remove from pan. Brown the oxtail on all sides, using the dat left in the pan from the bacon and butter. Add all the remaining ingredients except salt pepper and madeira.
Pour 1.5 litres of cold water, bring to the boil, remove scum and simmer for 3 to 4 hours.
Pour the soup through a sieve, and then through a cloth lined sieve. Season with salt pepper and a dash of madeira and serve.

I picked up a pack of oxtail in Tesco's the other day, it was reduced so thought I would give it a try. To be honest it wasn't that expensive before it was reduced.
I have a tin of Cross and Blackwell vegetable soup so thought about adding this to the oxtail and cooking it for about 7 or 8 hours. Does this sound the right thing to do or should I add some more ingredients?
Does anyone else cook oxtail in their SC?0 -
I looked at the packs of oxtail in Mr M this morning, nearly £5 a kg. I thought it was supposed to be offal and therefore cheap? Liver is loads cheaper than that I think and a lot less hassle..... doesn't taste as good I suppose. I lurve Oxtail![SIZE=-1]"Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit.
