I wonder if you can still get Oxtail. So tasty and warming for winter stews.
I seem to remeber there was a problem with the tail containing spinal cord, can you still get it? I've not seen it anywhere for ages.

Go in your local butchers shop and ask. They may be able to order it in for you.2008 Comping ChallengeWon so far - £3010 Needed - £230Debt free since Oct 20040

the butchers round here do it. Do you have any Halal butchers? Ours sells everything, i.e. offal, sheeps heads, goat, whole lambs, feet, legs, tails, the lot
Got a liver the size of a dinner plate once for less than a quid. They had tails in the window today.

Thx guys - I'm off to try to get some today then.
I remember having it when I was a child, it makes a tasty comforting stew, but I think you have to skim the fat off the top. I'll make it in the SC overnight and take the excess fat off next day when cooled, saving it for my bird cake of course!Bless Martin's Little Cotton Socks. I thank him for giving us MSE. I'm picking up an oxtail from the butchers on Saturday. What's your favourite oxtail soup recipe?
Oh, and will it taste like Heinz? :rotfl:0 -
god I love the heinz one. Its one of those rogue foods that I STILL love to eat despite the compelling reasons against it!
I watch with baited breath on this one. I hope someone will come up with one!!!! :T:beer: Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.

Here's mine. Bit fiddly and you need large soup pot and a hand blender. Been told its quite like Heinz.
Ingredients:
1 large ox tail
1 onion diced
1 litre of water
1 beef stock cube
pinch of cumin
twist of black pepper
1 tsp cornflour
Method:
In your soup pot add the water (use boiling water from kettle) and add stock cube and stir until dissolved. Add just the oxtail. If the oxtail is not covered by water add just enough to cover it. Bring to the boil then simmer for about 40 minutes. You should be able to remove the oxtail and the meat should be easily removed from the tail. if not let it simmer for another 10 minutes. Once you have removed the meat from the tail put the meat back into the soup pot (discard the tail bone) and add the diced onion. Simmer for another 10 minutes. Now add the cumin and black pepper and simmer again for another 10 minutes. Now remove from the heat and quickly blend, not so much as you don't want it totally smooth. Add the cornflour and stir well until it is mixed through and the soup starts to thicken. Put back onto a low heat and keep stirring until the soup thickens up. if you want is thicker add a little more cornflour. Then serve with warm crusty bread.
