Washable and hard wearing flooring?

We have three children and two dogs and live next to fields and woods that are currently very muddy, so the floors get filthy with paw prints, mucky children, plus frequent spills.

We took up the carpets and replaced them with cheap laminate which has been ok, but it's starting to look tatty in places with corners starting to peel up and it looks really dull and dusty looking even when it's just been washed.

I do hoover regular but that doesn't pick up the all the mud and spills so I really need something that can be mopped too.

What type of flooring would be best?

I have a mixture of Karndean and tiles downstairs and plan to put Karndean in any future house. It is almost indestructable! I house trained a large breed dog in my kitchen so it has been pooped, peed and puked on for months and still looks perfect. I don't use the recommended cleaning products and it still looks amazing. I have dented one bit of it by throwing a large bag of frozen bones on it to break them up. It only caused a tiny dent, so small that I haven't bothered to get the plank lifted and another one relaid.

Dirt sits on top of it and isn't hidden like it would be with carpets but a quick hoover sorts it out. It isn't cheap but its flipping good!

I've just had Karndean fitted (upstairs) and I was wondering what to clean it with. Do you use products like Flash floor cleaner to clean it?

Yep, bleach, washing up liquid, flash etc Anything that comes to hand. Mine is a driftwood effect one so others may be different but it still looks the same as when it went down.

Thanks. I've never heard of Karndean, but I like the pictures I've looked at. It is easy to fit by yourself?

When vinyl was first mentioned, I though people meant the cheap stuff on a roll :o

I bought some real lovely looking tiles out of B& Q and they are in the hall and kitchen, they never look dirty despite 2 dogs on them and are so easy to mop over and keep clean.......plenty of stuff out there just depends alot on your budget......

The only issue with Karndean is that it can scratch quite easily - if you do a search on MSE you will see some threads about this. If you speak to Karndean themselves (their helpline is very good), they will admit that if you have a stone in your shoe, then it could scratch the Karndean. That is why I decided to only have it upstairs (I've got tiles throughout downstairs).

It would be interesting to hear if happy35 has any problems with it scratching.
