Virgin - Miles Plus Money Upgradability

Currently looking to book tickets for Vegas for November flying with Virgin and thanks to some accrued miles have found flights for around £540 each (rather than over £600). As my miles expire next March i figured i'd be daft not to use them. My OH is considering paying for an upgrade either both ways or on the way back, but im not sure its possible on M+M seats without using more miles (which I dont appear to have enough of). Is it possible to upgrade on M+M tickets without using miles. In fact is it even possible to upgrade at all (having read some horror stories about having to purchase flexible tickets etc). Any ideas. Cant seem to find answers on the VA website.
