To anyone who likes to use plug in air fresheners. My friend was putting in a new refill when the top.which was faulty, came off. Some of the jelly substance came out on to her hands and now she has the most awful, raw and painful second degree burns i have ever seen. The hospital have given her antibiotics, pain killers and a special cream to soothe, but she is in agony and can hardly do anything. They have now bandaged her right hand as it wasnt healing, and is almost covered with the burns on both sides of her hand. The left hand ,it's a couple of fingers that are bad.
The warnings on the side of the box are minimal and say "may" cause an alergic reaction. When looking deeper into what these things contain,it is quite frightening. They can cause asthma attacks and migraines.
Please please be careful. What is most worrying is that these things are ,by their very nature, within reach of young children.

How scary.
Glad he was ok.0 -
My god how awful! Was it a chemical or heat burn? If chemical then that goes way beyond an allergy to being a hazardous chemical! If heat, I guess there's some sort of small heating element liquifying the gel, which will be awful to remove when it cools.0

My MIL moved into a temporary flat and there was a plug in freshener pluged in, the sort with liquid rather than jelly. She unplugged it so she could plug her TV and DVD player in and just lay the air freshener onto the glass topped stand that the TV stood on. 3 weeks later she was watching TV when there was a loud cracking noise and the TV fell forward, luckily fell off rather than smashed the glass top ripping itself out from the wall as it fell. It turned out the oily liquid in the freshener had seeped out, coated the base of the TV stand and the heat from the TV caused a reaction so that the stand itself cracked. She was terrified at the time and it was only when we got round there and felt the oil we realised what had happened.
I've also heard of fires caused by the plug in ones actually catching alight while plugged into the wall. I just won't use them now at all0 -

Some of those air fresheners contain some very dangerous chemicals like formaldehyde.

Why on earth do people buy these things ? If your house smells get rid of the cause - don't try and mask it with a cocktail of chemicals !0

Could I also warn everyone about the glow sticks. I did not realise that they contain powdered glass until a party which ended up in a visit to casualty for someone with it in her eye.0
