Just found out i am pregnant..

Hi
I have just found out i am pregnant (6 weeks), My boyfriend of 10 months is away on holiday till Sunday so i have not told him yet.
This was not planned but i am happy if very stunned.

I dont really know where to start with what i need to do.
I have only just started my current job 2 weeks ago after being made redundant. Will i quailfy for smp?

Any advice would be appreicated, as i have no idea where to start.

Thank you

  • Can anyone ever afford a child? I work full time, my partner has his own business, we are both in our 30's, so i hope that we will be ok but as with all situations things can sometimes happen that you do not plan for.
  • Congratulations - I would recommend you check out the under 12 weeks thread on here - really great to hear that others are going through the same as you and everyone has lots of advice.
i'm around seven weeks at the moment and its a fantastic but worrying time I've found the forum a great source of support and hope you will too

There is quite a bit of help available: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/MoneyTaxAndBenefits/BenefitsTaxCreditsAndOtherSupport/Expectingorbringingupchildren/index.htm

Obviously the fact you are working means that hopefully you can squirrel some money away before you take maternity leave. You will get maternity allowance as you don't quality for SMP.

Given you've not been with your boyfriend that long, he may take some time to get his head round the idea. Hopefully he will stay and support you, but you need to think about how to tell him. If he can't cope with the fact, then you can go to the CSA if necessary.

You should go to your doctor as soon as possible and get booked in for a 12 week scan with your midwife.

You don;t need to tell work about the baby til youre about 6 months gone I think, but double check that.

I know exactly how you feel though: my daughter was conceived after her dad and I had been together only 5 months, I was in the middle of my uni finals when I found out and neither of us had a job. We're now happily married with a 4 year old and both of us are in work, so from the worst planned starts happy endings can come!

    Best of luck.
  • Hi HulaGirl, Congratulations!! Hope your well! :T As DueMarch11 said you won't qualify for SMP but should for Maternity Allowance, I was in a very similar situation when I had my first DS and I missed out on SMP by one day can you believe and I think I had worked there longer than 2 weeks at the time but not much longer!!.....I did get Maternity Allowance though through the Job Centre.:)
