Ctc

Hi

We have a joint income of around £42,000. Next tax year this will drop to around £36,000. Have 2 children, my 10 year old son has been awarded DLA (middle rate care and lower rate mobility) I work 24 hours a week and OH works 45 hours a week.

I recently put in a claim for CTC - was awarded 252 for the remainder of the year. it said something about £50 every 4 weeks until 22/04/11

Phoned to tell them about the DLA award - award notice came and said amount due was £252, amount already paid was £150, and then £22 on 22/07/11 and then £32 every 4 weeks.

Is that right ??

Really dont understand how to work it out.

Thanks

Sounds like your award hasn't changed (ie still 252 this year which will be the family element). When they do recalc they pay a lump sum which it what you're owed to that date and spread the rest out over the rest of the tax year. They do that even if the total award hasn't changed!

Your other figures and dates don't make sense though - 22/07/11 ??

sorry should have been 22/04/11 - DOH
  • I don't really understand the figures and dates, but you should receive some extra money because you are now entitled to the disability element of child tax credits, as your son receives DLA. If your award hasn't changed, I would ring and ask about the additional amount due because of the disability element.
  • Don't quote me but I think to receive the disability element your son would have to be in receipt of the higher element of the care component.

According to this page there are 2 levels of CTC payable for a disabled child -disabled child element and severely disabled child element. I'd imagine you'd not need to be getting higher mobility to get the lower rate?

    ETA-
No you don't need to be getting higher rate DLA, but if you do you could get an extra ctc payment:

It sounds like their income is too high for more than the family element, even with the disability premium.

OP - what exactly does the award say, it should list elements you get and reduction due to income.

There are two elements - disability and severe disability. You receive the disability element if your child is in receipt of DLA and you receive the severe disability element if they get high rate care. I receive both elements as my son gets HRC.

From the above link, this information:

    How much will you get?

The amount of extra Child Tax Credit you get depends on how much care your child needs. In this tax year - 6 April 2010 to 5 April 2011 - you could get approximately:
    • £2,715 a year, that is around £52 a week, if your child is disabled
    • £3,810 a year, that is around £73 a week, if your child is severely disabled
The amount you get also depends on other money you have coming in.
    • Disability Living Allowance doesn't count as income when your tax credits are worked out.
    • Other benefits like Carer's Allowance do count as income and can reduce your tax credit payments.
To find out more about how much you may get, use the online calculator or call the Tax Credit Helpline.

    The rates are here:

    http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/rates/taxcredits.htm

£2715 for a disabled child, plus an additional £1095 if your child gets HRC.
  • Zagfles, a good point that I didn't consider. I didn't know that the disability elements would not be paid if you only get the family element. Thank you for pointing that out.
  • Just read that link sent it does state and I quote:

Who can get the extra money?
You can get extra Child Tax Credit if any one of the following applies:
Disability Living Allowance is paid for your child
    your child is registered blind
your child came off the blind register in the 28 weeks before you claimed tax credits
If your child is severely disabled and gets what's known as the Highest Rate Care Component of Disability Living Allowance you may get an additional payment.
You can still qualify for the extra money even if the Disability Living Allowance stops because your child goes into hospital.
  • I would phone them and asked.
