Slow Laptop

A friend has asked me to improve the performance of his very old and slow laptop. Its due for replacing soon but in the meantime I am trying to help make it run a bit faster.
Heres the Specs:
Toshiba Satellite 1800, 512mb RAM, 30GB HDD, Pentium 3

I googled the model it appears that the maximum RAM size it can take is 512mb so upgrading the RAM will not an option.

I have uninstalled many unwanted applications and installed CCleaner, Malwarebytes and Avast. After Defragging, its running a bit faster but still sluggish.
Is there anything else I need can do?
Heres the HiJack This Log.

Thanks

I will try that later. Thanks

So you are saying the Windows Firewall will be better to use than Zone Alarm?

ZA will be using ram (check the commit charge in task manager), and slowing the machine down, so yes

To double check whether you can increase the ram goto crucial.com and run their scanner, depending on computer age it may or may not detect the ram but it is worth a try.

    I noticed the pagefile.sys as over 900mb.
I know its not wise to delete this file but is there a way to reduce its size?
The laptop has 512mb Ram on XP

you shouldn't lower the size of the pagefile, you should let the system manage the size of it. Right-click on My Computer > Properties > Advanced > Performance > Advanced and change the virtual memory to system-managed size. You'll need to reboot for it to take effect :)
    ......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D
  • I would keep avast (or maybe try avira) and malwarebytes and make sure the computer is clean (update definitions and run a full scan). Closed's link above is very good and I particularly liked the memory clean up program.

How does the Clean Mem work?Does it just run in the background or you need to launch it every time?

runs in the background as a windows task, it's not a miracle cure, you have to follow the other suggestions too for best results
