Prom dress for teacher.

Hi guys and gals,

I'm a 29 year old teacher at a secondary school. My year 11 form are leaving this year and I need something to wear for the prom. For one reason or another I've never made it in the past and so have no idea what to wear.

I'm a size 8 and look as though I'm perhaps 23 years old and 5"4.5. I have absoluetly no idea what to wear and don't want to spend a fortune. I was thinking perhaps £60 max. I know it's a while off yet but I hate shopping so figure if I give myself plenty of time I don't have to get stressed out over it.

I'm a bit of a tomboy at heart and living in jeans and trainners (obvs not for work...lol). I'll like to make an effort though and so would like to wear a dress of some variety. I also don't really have any shoes that are dressy - and can't cope with big heals (or stomach my toes being on show). I'm a blondie and have rather pale creamy skin.

Any ideas. I'm tiny with some curves (ie...I have boobs and a bum - as much as you can at a size 8)...so as far as I'm aware I can carry off most styles. I just don't want to look stupid and let my kids down. HELP!!

    Hi Twinklie,
Maybe ask a good friend to go with you into town and just have fun trying on some different styles? I'm not sure if all the summer dress ranges are in yet, or if it will be in March or April? M&S and Debenhams will probably have nice ranges for a starting point and hopefully not too expensive. If you try them on for size you may even be able to get something second hand off Ebay, esp if you're not likely to get much wear from it. I've worn ebay dresses to weddings and parties before and had many complients for them- esp ones from Coast, Jane Norman and Monsoon that I couldn't afford brand new.

    Happy dress shopping!

or - you could try a vintage shop (I'm involved with a social enterprise for women based in south Wales) which sells vintage clothing. That way, whatever you wear there's not going to be a pupil wearing the same! There's some fantastic vintage fashion around. Good luck.

if you're the "boogie on down type" make sure you can safely throw yourself across the dance floor without revealing too much flesh :D Just incase any of the little cherubs want to come back for sixth form!

I would suggest you go for something relatively understated and sophisticated, not too OTT as you are an adult not 16 and it's not your prom. I don't mean frumpy just not overly fussy.
Regarding shoes, you really will need a bit of height but wedges may be easier than stilletoes.
  • I agree with JC9297 - something nice, that fits and suits you, that you'll wear again and again, as that will look 'right' to the kids.

Your students will love that you're there, some of the girls might notice what you're wearing if it's especially trendy or stylish - for sbout 3 seconds - then, if you've done the last 5 years well, they'll say 'Thanks, miss, you were a great teacher, I'm really going to miss you'. If they're a little bit 'emotional' (or there was champagne at home before they set off!) they might blub a bit, and then they'll want to dance with their friends - again, if you're popular, they might get you up dancing too. It's unlikely that the boys will notice what you're wearing - in fact, if they do, it's a sign that you may have got the skirt length and/or cleavage a little wrong! The boys will mostly be looking at the girls, plucking up the courage to flirt with the gilrs or doing a Big Boys Rugby Scrum version of dancing.

It's their prom; you will, I'm sure, only want them to enjoy and remember a great night. Take away happy memories and a dress you'll want to wear again and again. (I'm afraid my 'prom' dress has done service at several proms, a few weddings and is my 'frock' that I take away on foreign holidays as its easy to pack and looks nice on summer evenings out!)

Thanks...thats what I'm after. But what qualifies as understated and elegant. I'm really clueless about these sorts of things. I'm a jeans and tshirt kinda gal! Never really been to a wedding or other dressy occassion other than my own. And somehow, I think my wedding dress might be a bit OTT! :rotfl:

Also the last time I went shopping I had a big cry in the middle of town because I couldn't cope...lol. I was shopping for a coat. That's why I'm starting now...to reduce the pressure. I bloody hate clothes shopping.

How about a wiggle dress, attractive yet not exposing too much flesh.
