DVLA Fine SORN

Dear all,

My car was declared SORN, and I agreed to sell it to a garage that is right next to my house. So I drove the short drive (1 minute literally) to the garage and have now been fined for taking the car onto the road that day.

Does anybody know if the DVLA allows you to drive an off road car to the garage in order to sell it?

Thank you very much in advance.

You should try https://www.pepipoo.com for this as they have experts there who can help you.
Excel Parking, MET Parking, Combined Parking Solutions, VP Parking Solutions, ANPR PC Ltd, & Roxburghe Debt Collectors. What do they all have in common?
They are all or have been suspended from accessing the DVLA database for gross misconduct!
Do you really need to ask what kind of people run parking companies?

No, Only if it is being driven to or from a pre booked MOT test.

Thank you for the reply, I was wondering whether one would have to provide any evidence of the appointment for the pre-booked MOT test or is it just a matter of giving the details of the garage.

    Thank you.

I Would still post on pepipoo to see if they could help, they may offer something that could help

How did they know you had used the car on the road? You could have taken it there on a trailer.

I did have a quick read before, but I will post now. Thanks

Thats true, but I guess I might need a special license to even allow me to tow a car with a trailer
  • No, I have a normal one and tow a trailer, need to notify insurance though. The garage could have trailered it.

I would not do that unless they did MOT test it on that day! It is computerised through DVLA they would know if it was or not. Perjury is a much more serious matter!

By all means post on Pepipoo but I don't think any excuse will be found. If an untaxed vehicle is seen on the road that's usually an absolute offence! [except for the MOT situation]

If I was you I would just try and limit the damage! as they are entitled to claim the tax from the date the SORN was made, if you never cancelled the SORN. If the vehicle was being scrapped write to the DVLA explain this and they may just fine you, and not charge the back duty!

However try Pepipoo you never know!

Thank you very much for the feedback, I did try Pepipoo and they seemed to be of the same opinion.

I didnt realise that the DVLA would actually have a record of all BOOKED MOT tests even if one wasnt actually taken?! That seems like quite a sophisticated system
