Money is not the only payment. They get to talk down to people, treat them with contempt, puff out their chests with pompous self importance. Believe me Magistrates go without pay just for the 'power'. Ever heard the saying 'All Power Corrupts and Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely'?

    hollydays- magistrates are not paid

They are "paid" via "expenses" (I work with a magistrate so I know from experience)..............part of those "expenses" are loss of earnings whilst performing their duties.

Now, if a magistrate chooses to declare that he/she is not being paid whilst performing his/her duties but, in fact, is then they're quids in because they get financially reimbursed twice.

Somewhat worryingly, no checks are made with the magistrates' employer to verify the authenticity of any of this (again, I know this from personal experience).

Any advice that you receive from me is worth exactly what you paid for it. Not a penny more or a penny less.

Chuckles, are you implying that Magistrates are not whiter than white? Surely not?

I've always found it amusing that the magistrate I work with has had speeding offences almost perpetually on his/her licence for the last 11 years.

And yet they're deemed qualified to lecture and pass judgment on those before them who've committed exactly the same offences.......

Well, the recently erected extension on the back of their property is very nice I have to admit :D

    I rest my case!

You could maybe take a look at the Freemasons thread on MSE.

  • I don't know any magistrates nor am one myself but am surprised how easy people find it to criticise a necessary function of society. Are you saying we should have no magistrates court?

At the end of the day if you're truly innocent take it through the courts and get off. If not then take your punishment like an adult and get on with life. Your posts seem to imply an attitude that rules shouldn't apply to you (setting off as many speed cameras as you can) and i am glad you won't be driving in the UK for a while with that approach. Speeding increases the chance of killing somebody.

You are way off the mark:

I am simply stating that Magistrates are not impartial, it is not a fair and just system. It seems strange that in legal circles that Magistrates Courts are seen as Police Courts.

I do not think that rules shouldn't apply to me, I just somewhat misguidely would appreciate the law being imposed on a fair and just basis.

And infact, if you took the trouble to read this thread, prior to making your assumptions, you would read that my conviction was not for speeding.

Alas, you demonstrate your haste to (deliberately?) misunderstand. Where do I state or imply your conviction was for speeding? I was referring (following my thorough reading of the thread yesterday before posting - a habit I can recommend) to your appalling statement about setting off speed cameras when returning to the UK. Now I am only aware of one way of setting off speed cameras and frankly that puts lives at risk. It may have been a bit of macho bravado that you don't mean, in which case you can say so but your response merely attempts to obfuscate the issue.
