Oh my lordi lord Santander, not again

Yet another incident with Santander that I will share with you incase any of you dont check your statements in FULL.

I have been with Santander since Dec 2009, so not long.

In that time :

i have had my cash counter deposit paid into someone elses account

Had someone elses chq paid into my account

Passed security on someone elses account when i wanted to query a transaction on my account. They had the wrong account on screen but still passed me on security??

The easy online switcher went comp[letely wrong and couldnt have been more difficult.

Just today i get a statement showing my authorised overdraft as £500, but i got charged an unauthorised overdraft fee for being -£489!?!? haha

To be fair they instantly refunded me as they were as baffled as me.

But if you dont read every single statement then who knows what you've been charged for??

Just to let you all know to check your statements near the bottom (if you dont already!):D

Santander have charged me £25 this month for a direct debit payment that they claim there wasn't enough money in my account to cover. I have been through my statements for the last 3 months and haven't gone near my overdraft limit once in that time so I don't know where that get their 'facts' from.

Seriously OP, ditch and switch. You won't be able to move to a worse bank.

I recommend an HSBC or Co-Operative group account, 1st Direct or Smile if you manage your account online rather than in branch.

  • i really hate switching because it can be such a pain moving all the direct debits and wages.

I only switched because Halifax changed the overdraft fees, "Abbey" were charging monthly % at the time. Now they have changed to the same method I have no reason to stay

In my experience it was very easy.

First open a new account with a proper bank.

Secondly phone all the DD people and they will do the change over the phone. The quickest DD I did was a weekly one and it was ready for the next week.

I moved from an English RBS account to avoid Santander and all DD's were ready for the following month and also wages.

I think your most difficult task is likely to be getting Santander to close your account.
  • the lovely people at santander keep on resetting up direct debits that I have cancelled (in writing!!) and then charging me when trying to pay the DD takes me overdrawn!!! priceless

needless to say, I bank elsewhere now!!

I'm not a Santander fan myself (in fact we are in the process of moving away from them), however I have to take issue with you on this. I'm a former bank employee myself and I can assure you the bank is not resetting up the direct debit, it is the company who are taking the money out that are setting it up again. They can do this because they will have a direct debit mandate that you have signed (either in writing or electronically).

Unless you contact the company to cancel the direct debit then there is nothing the bank can do to stop it. I used to tell customers this if they called us to cancel a DD and most customers where not aware of this. If you have contacted the company and they are still taking the money from your account then you'd need to look at making a claim through the Direct Debit Indemnity scheme.

If Scamtander were worth their salt, surely they would have pointed this out and helped the customer appropriately?
