I have only just stumbled across this thread and have spent an enjoyable time looking at all the ingenious ways people have devised of being prudent and saving money. I am an ex-teacher who had to retire early for reasons of stress and impending ill health and had to take a 25% reduction in my pension to do so. Therefore, I need to be careful with my cash. Recently, my OH, who is also on board with the retrenchment efforts, and I have:-
-changed our utility supplier and have saved £80 a month (frankly, I'm horrified that BG was ripping us off so badly)
-taken advantage of a £600 off voucher to replace our 22 year old boiler while hubby was working in order to make efficiency savings
-reduced our home service insurance premium by £23 a month because we have a new boiler (lasts for a year)
-reduced our car insurance policies slightly by shopping around and negotiating
-I think I save £10-£40 a month by shopping around, buying in bulk, 'dropping a brand', using vouchers and 'stacking' offers as Martin Lewis advises
-I probably save another £50 a month by ignoring vouchers and offers I don't really need and going without
Last year I saved £2,500 by not keeping the cleaner/ironer I had when working and by cancelling my 'Times' subscription.
I have been toying with the idea of starting up a Santander account as it looks as if it pays a good rate of interest on amounts up to a certain sum. I am not really sure how it works or how to go about it and wonder whether the trouble of setting it up will be worth it. Does anyone on this thread have any experience of the benefits and drawbacks of the Santander current account?0 -
