Grrrr!! Rant Alert! I am fuming!!:mad::mad::mad::mad:
Had a hospital appointment this morning and, afterwards, walked into the town to visit a favourite charity shop. It is an independent trust for the profoundly disabled - I take all my unwanted clothes and book there.
Whilst I was looking through the books there I noticed a man in the corner taking clothes off the hangars and stuffing them into the large shoulder bag he was wearing - I saw him take 3 items . I alerted the (elderly) ladies on the till and continued to watch him. He picked up a 10p item and went and paid for it - then went to walk out of the shop.
I couldn't stand by and say nothing, so I said "Don't forget to pay for the clothes you put in your bag" - well, he went ballistic, swearing in some Eastern European language, called me a "fat, ugly b!tch"and said he'd paid for the 10p item - then stalked out of the shop. The ladies who worked there were more upset and concerned about his swearing at me (yeah! bothered!) and said that they had been advised not to confront these thieves, for their own safety :mad:.
What sort of world has it become when people steal from a charity shop FGS!! I know some folk will think I should have minded my own business - but I'm just not that sort of person . If someone accused me of not paying for something I would happily turn out my bag and show them the contents - this guy was away on his toes quicker than you could blink! I am just so angry!
On a happier note, it has been a lovely sunny day here (yes, we have the SUN here not some daft "yellow ball") and I got some fantastic bargains at the supermarket:j. My washing is all dry and smells lovely, the next load is in and I don't have to cook tonight as we're having something I cooked and froze previously. Life is good!
:D

Just thought - for those interested in Vitamin D, I believe Ted Hutchinson wrote numerous posts about the benefits, on the Health & Beauty board. Sorry, don't know how to do a link

Frugalista I agree totally and would have done the same thing. The problem is alot of CS are staffed by older ladies and people know that they can get away with it cos they cant do anything to stop them. Its so wrong in so many ways.0

Hi frugalista,
Are any of these links the ones you were looking for?
Vitamin D 25(OH)D TEST BARGAIN.
Vitamin D form sunlihgt - seems Ted is right.
PMS Vitamin D and Calcium
Free online Vitamin D calculator

Re vit D and 20 mins a day being the optimum for keeping your levels up - this means 20 mins a day per day all year. Not possible in the UK !
Not only possible but mandatory f you have livestock. I guess I'm out a minimum of two and a half hours a day....getting my vit d. Its more comfortable at this time of year. Today I've taken my MSE breaks while in the garden too.0 -
Using that link to calculate how long it would take me to get enough vitD today here--
I'd have to sit in the sun from 6.84 - 16.69 which is a total of 9.85 hours :rotfl::rotfl:0 -

Right - gone into the link "free online...calculator" to check. Realised its Scandinavian, swopped it to English language and put in location and thought "errr...have I got this right?" as to assuming that the number of hours the thing says were sunny in my location were the number of hours I would have been busily absorbing Vit. D IF I had been out in it? (which is, of course, rather different to the time I was actually out in it...). So I sat around out in the sun during my lunchbreak - but have no idea if I "got my quota" for the day or no.
Am I missing summat here? I've not quite worked this out yet...0 -
frugalista my previous neighbour worked in a charity shop for a childrens hospice and they regularly had shoplifters in there. They were also told not to tackle them directly but being a feisty German lady she had no problems with doing this. I have to agree that it is a very sorry state of affairs when the shoplifters target charity shops.I am playing all of the right notes just not necessarily in the right order

Have been missing in action, either doing stuff with the kids or in the garden enjoying the sun.
The garden is looking productive already and we are harvesting lots of lettuce, herbs and rhubarb. The bees are merrily pollinating my fruit trees too and the hens are laying more eggs than I can deal with. :j
OH and I have worked out a new budget to see us through the next couple of months until one of his new contracts pays out but we have scary maintainance jobs to do on the house. So more belt tightening in the interim.
Kidcat I would definitely try to make the raised beds. OH has made me 4 from recycled wood as well as a gated fruit cage and a treehouse for the children.
Frugalista I would have been livid too.
Re VitD, I am prescribed a high dose from my GP as my levels are ridiculously low despite being outdoors more than most, so people do seem to absorb it at different rates.0 -

He did write endlessly on the subject. Problem was I couldn't understand half of it:o
I have ordered myself some Vit D tablets which I shall take during the darker months I think.
I was planning on being pale and interesting this year but the weather this Easter has done away with that ideathe kids just love being outdoors so I have to go and join them
And having heard about the rise in ricketts didn't slather them in sun cream either. Right couple of brown berries they are too or maybe that's just the dirt I haven't washed off them :rotfl:
