Have had a great day today. Garden is looking good and most of the downstairs housework has been done. Have just sat in the garden with OH having a glass of HM blackberry gin surveying all of the work we have done today. I even managed to fit in half an hour sat in the sun with my book (one of lifes simple pleasures IMO).
I am giving myself the evening off the sunday night ironing as I have two days leave in the week and can catch up with it then. Will have a quick shower get into my jammies and snuggle up to OH who has worked really hard today (garage and down the side of the house tided up, lawn scarified and mowed).
For once I feel as though I have relaxed a little on my day off.I am playing all of the right notes just not necessarily in the right order.

God for you. We've moved onto wine without finishing all the jobs we set for ourselves today, but we got some stuff done we're pleased with.
I'll be rushing round doing housework at dawn for the structural engineer coming tomorrow......I don't know why I try and get the house looking as if nothing is wrong with the way it is for the people who are meant to be fixing it!:rotfl:0 -
hahaha i know it weird isn't l'rates.
Yay i got the instructions right for once!
Thanks Jenni for that. We'll definitely have to meet up soon.
Regarding seeds it is strange, my usual sowing times over the past couple of years have worked out really well. But this year just rubbish, so i decided to do try out a new way and lo and behold its worked!
Just potted a new plant, just dug up a bit of mud and its a strange mix of clay/sand type mixture, very puzzling.
Well got an extra one staying tonight, coddy's mates asked to stay. So just served up a frozen pizza and leftover wrap stuff from earlier, so they happy. Also got lots of twinks, loaf, bread buns made. Along with two halfs of a sponge cake. So going to make a pack lunch for the the lads tomorrow. OH has offered, not under my influence for once, to take the two older ons to a bmx track, while snips goes to a birthday party.
Been so nice today, its simple pleasures that make life seem so worthwhile. Enjoy the wine/gin/tea etc and enjoy the surroundings.
Me i'm off to look at a knitting book that i got out of the library, then start on a new book by Joe Hill. Snips is in bed, while the older ones play on the xbox.0 -

sound like you all had a nice but busy weekend of toil in garden :-)
I manged to get 4 books on frugal living from the library (not that they're telling me anything that's not on here) which I fancied on amazon so have spent a couple of hours reading - bliss.
I also managed to plant 2 fruit trees that have been leaning against my back wall for 2 weeks. Very pleased with my effort, just hope that they a) grow and b) I haven't planted them too close to the fence :-( You all seem to be doing so well with your veg planting.
Have you noticed how it always happens when you fix one thing something else breaks? I just had my boiler serviced and 2 toilets fixed and I'm now convinced my other toilet is leaking. Well it's either that or the drains underneath. Eitherway not great, but at least the sun has been shining all weekend and a 4 day week. x0 -

Hello all
Wonder if I could pick your brains re growing veg please.
Because he knows I'm having a tough year both financially and with DDs Mental Health, my Dad who lives 250 miles away from me has surprised me by ordering some Tomato Plants, Cucumber, Peppers & he thinks (but can't find the paperwork) Courgette & Aubergine plants too for me from Jer$ey Pl@nts D!rect.
He's a wonderful Dad, and tries his utmost to give me money on a regular basis, which I refuse, so this is his way around it, bless him
So - having never grown a vegetable in my life, I'm not sure what to do with them. I received my Tomato Plants on Thursday, which are a little plug of earth containing a plant. I have six plants of about 2-3" high, but the only information that came with them, was that there are 2 Cherry Red, 2 Yellow & Two Scarlet, so although he thinks he ordered standard tomatoes I'm thinking they could be Cherry Tomatoes?
Luckily I had an unopened bag of multi purpose compost in the shed, and so, for now, I've put 2 plants each in pots about 6" diameter by 8" high.
I remember ChocClare I think it was saying that florists often have black buckets going cheap, so I'm going to see if I can source some tomorrow, as money is tight and I want to eventually plant them into something I can move around the garden.
So my questions are:
How many plants can I put in a standard black bucket?
If I get six plants each of tomatoes, cucumber, peppers, courgette and aubergine, any idea of roughly how much compost I will need?
When do I put the plants outside? - at the moment they're on my bedroom windowsill but when the others arrive I wont have room to put them all on there.
Any advice for a novice would be much appreciatedAug11 £193.29/£240

Hi Hippeechiq, Good luck with your growing ventures , I seem to remember vaguely that you have yard rather than garden? before we moved we only had a small yard and got masses in pots so eminantly doable. Tomatoes will go 1 to a pot, morrisons sometimes sell off flower buckets or our local focus has payless green ordinary buckets for 99p which I use for tomatoes (and lots of other stuff) - they hold 12 litres so you'll get about 4 buckets from a 50 litre bag of compost, the flower buckets hold sightly less so maybe 5 or 6. I leave my peppers and aubergine on the windowsill or in the plastic greenhouse as need it sunnier and warmer than we usually get outside. Courgettes 1 in a bucket same as toms and hope you like courgettes! thet tend to go rampant and you get masses, pick anytime from being as big as your biggest finger and just keep harvesting, if you leave them to get too big the plant sort of runs out of steam and it cuts your harvest down. Once the danger of frost is passed you can plant out but harden off first which means putting them out for an increasing length of time to get used to the great outdoors.
Had a lovely planting out day today, got loads more seeds in the garden - got early varieties of lots of stuff and been really organised this year as due to imminent arrival of number 2 I may not be up for much gardening in May so it's going to have to look after itself! OH and DD kept me company outside on the blanket. DD finally showing sign of walking, she's hypermobile and that has delayed her so fantastic timing! can just see me ringing OH at work to say "she's done it and by the way my waters have just broken!!!!"
Money still tight here as always but seem to feel better about it when the sun is shining and I can potter in my garden. DD and I go out evey morning to see what has grown and she loves to look at the seedlings and announce "plants growed mummy" going to get her her own bucket to plant up when she's on her feet.0 -
Rather murky here and no sign of yellow ball but it is supposed to come over to play with later.
I thought someone (honeybee?) asked about under arm stains and how to get rid of them, but I didn't see an answer. Did anyone have a solution?
Lovely weather over the weekend. Lawn mowed, hedges clipped, plants growing 'cept I think the aubergines are going to AustraliaWill go to the garden centre an see if they have any.
