I've heard it too, and googled and found this

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rabbit_starvation

That was an interesting article, thanks. It underlines the need for us all to make our own decisions and take responsibility for our own bodies when you think that for several decades the 'scientific advice' has been to cut off the fat (and throw it away). Of course the argument then is that is is natural and good for you to replace the fat you have already paid for with vegetable oils. Most are not native to these islands and all require processing before being usable. The same 'experts' tell us to avoid processed foods.

Apparently quails are lovely to keep and very quiet too. It was said on Granada reports last night that there is a statute in law to say that people in rented homes can keep chickens (but not cockerels) harks back to the war so Im getting my girls back - don't know if this is for everywhere or just Manchester so don't quote me! Im going to have to check out the quail link though!

A gamekeeper gave me a bag of pigeon breast last year which I have yet to cook. Keep forgetting to get a recipe.
I eat a lot of pigeon (and pheasant, partridge, wild goose, wild duck etc) as my dad shoots a lot. Not much point in eating anything other than the pigeon breasts. They're best slow cooked with onions, bacon, mushrooms, tomatoes, bay leaf etc or pan fried (worth marinating as you have no idea whether they'll be tough or not, then flour before frying) with sliced onions and mushrooms. Add a splash of red wine, port or brandy to deglaze the pan, then add cream to the sauce before serving. Treat it like lean beef - but remember it has NO fat on it, so you do need to add it or it'll dry out.

Rabbit... I agree with whoever said it smells revolting when cooking. It's also full of bones... too much like hard work!

You're welcome. :) It interests me. we try and eat relatively ''simply'' as regards processing. we eat natural fats ...butter etc and oils, olive oil etc. I will not have ''the m word'' (margarine...shudder) in the house...though my dad delights in bringing his own for sandwiches when he's here because he thinks it winds me up ;).

We eat everything that's been mentioned here ...bar badger ..

Haribo, hope you get your hot water and dishwasher sorted out today without too much expense..

Thanks for asking. Water is fixed and awaiting plumber's bill. :(
OH fixed the dishwasher and if he gives me a bill I will hit him with it. :D
Glad the job seems to be working out.

No real tough news for me today, just becoming concerned that OH's workload has lessened a bit and this wll affect cash flow in a few weeks. Somtimes being self employed is like living with a permanent threat of redundancy as there is no such thing as guaranteed work. :( Am expecting the Corporation Tax bill any day now so not spending unless necessary.

Cheered myself up by spending the day batch cooking (thriftily) for family who are coming for the weekend :j and teaching 15 eager children how to chit potatoes and dig over raised beds all afternoon. :D

AHA! I've found that person that buys my books lol!!

Welshcamper – have you tried the local charity shops? And is it something that maybe we could help with (i.e. what colour are you thinking about to go with the dress? ;))

Have to say that we like bunny slow-cooked with cider, lardons, lettuce & carrots – sort of a Peter Rabbit’s stock-pot! We also get quite a bit of game as both my bF's hubby and a colleague both shoot regularly. We had a young goose before Christmas - DH said never again as he nearly got RSI from plucking the darn thing!

Have ordered a preserving book today from the book man at work – it looks pretty good, and at £6 for a hardback wasn’t such a bad price (no such books in the charity shops near me :() so next Christmas peeps will be getting jam / chutney / beverages :D

DS2 is a little concerned that he won’t get a PGCE place...currently doing a Masters whilst living with us.....life has been interesting (!) but better (;)) since DH readjusted his diary to make his home-based days mainly when DS2 is away so we get a bit of privacy being newly -weds an’all! :p It has been a bit of a shock bills-wise though, although our boiler wasn’t working last winter and packed up completely in late October this year to be replaced by a combi in December (plus the gas-fire was condemned in November & has only just been replaced), so we’re not sure where we are with gas consumption. Electricity consumption has definitely gone up – an extra lappie, iPhone & docking unit, lights etc that are on when we are either asleep or at work has used up our credit with our leccie suppliers. And the shopping has gone up for the 4-5 days a week he is here.....but our personal wine consumption has gone down as we share a bottle between 3 rather than 2 so at least that’s a health benefit! :D

Need to get myself sorted for the “garden” aka that tiny back yard – think it will be tomatoes again, also need to replace a couple of the herbs (thyme & chives that have got very tired) and want to try basil (anyone want some pesto if we get a glut?!) and flat-leaf parsley as we use loads of these. Hoping to get some peas or beans into pots too, and maybe a few squash, depending on their requirements space-wise.

Hester - sounds like The Minder has come around to your way of thinking ;) how did you persuade him I wonder :p;) :rotfl:

am still feeling grrr:mad::mad::mad: had asked who my midwife was going to be and they said oh we encourage them to visit you at :mad:home and introduce themselves as we have one of the few cottage hospitals left here with birth facilities. So 3 oclock this big enormous woman knocks on th door and I let her in after checking who she was, the midwife had arrived.

Her attitude was disgusting, gave me a lecture on older mothers/first babies:mad: then went on droning on about first :mad:my weight and shes built like sumo wrestler, then my blood pressure was high:eek: I wonder why! and!my age group was difficult to maintain healthy baby weights... could have slapped her..

Then she assumed Id be bottle feeding and when she saw my pile of towelling nappies on the side she prounounced how much easier it would be to use disposable ones...what"""

That was it I lost my temper and am afraid asked her to leave, she wasnt pleased, so went upstairs got my old NHS badge and shoved it under her nose, then Monty appeared and she launched into him about my attitude he promptly said..Madam leave the premises in his posh voice :rotfl: when she had gone he was on the phone to her bosses....after a polite and well worded complaint looks like I have to go choose new midwife..phew didnt want that miserable lady that was so out of date Id be ashamed to be a midwife...no wonder complaints against the NHS are rising and there cutting back even more....ye gods Im wondering where all this cost cutting , firing and expenditure cuts are going to end.

Plus the new council tax bill came 7% rise, our income hasnt risen 7% am now looking forward to the water rates and the electric bill....ah well will just have to cope...am seeing this as a kind of exercise to get total control over most things, like food bills, fuel, car useage its a challenge now ..so bring it on Davie Cameron this gals ready...

Father had last fuel delivery today:eek: so fuel in this area varies between £126.9 (us) to £1.39 per litre:eek::eek::eek: and 15 miles away its as high as £1.42 per litre prices checked on MyPetrolPrices app on my iPhone my god its biting round here. Dad says once this lots gone he doesnt want to be in the petrol selling game again and I cant blame him....where will this all end?

Sorry to sound so gloomy but I realised how much Ive had my head buried in the sand over the last 3 months or so and reality has just came in through the door time to get real and get some money busting ideas going.

Keep up the good work, am off to read some more tips.

Keep well keep safe keep moneysaving
    Hugs:)

:)Annie, I don't often post but felt I had to. I'm lost for words that someone, let alone a professional would behave like that. I hope you now are able to find a nice friendly midwife who is happy to meet an 'older mother' with a smile on her face and a positive attitude.:)
You have all your friends on here anyway, and a lovely Monty to look after you.
    Jue :)
