My next foray into "elegant simplicity" is to perfect my mulled Lidl's apple juice recipe for spring picnics. I haven't got it quite right yet (fussy me) but so far cinamon & star anise seem to be the key spice ingredients. Lidls is the cheapest apple juice that tastes of proper apples I've found. A flask of something hot and a bit different to the usual tea or coffee makes it seem more special + mulled apple juice is kid safe. Anyone care to join me in experimenting a bit?

For the summer I want to try and brew "lashings and lashings of ginger pop" so will be tackling this after easter.

OH...quick thought here...but it wasnt apple juice I walked away with from LETS Trading Event today - 'twas leftover orange juice. Not many peeps there this morning - so "unsold" books and some other goods dropped off at a charity shop and got told we have an organisation for helping people to "resettle" in a new home (first I knew - so "unsold" towels left with them later). Another charity shop stop for the electrical goods an accompanying friend had - and we were duly unloaded...

Now - back to that orange juice from leftover refreshments. Has anyone got any similar ideas to that "mulled apple juice" as to what I can do with that purlease?
  • Ceridwen orange juice is nice warmed through with honey; or with cinnamon and topped with grated nutmeg.

It started to snow around 7a.m.and kept on all morning.

DH got some meat out of the freezer in the garage for me and I refuse to go out to the shops while pavements are so slippy so might make a loaf and rolls later.

Tea will be a veggie lasagne made with Quorn, grated carrots, onions, cans tomatoes and homemade cheese sauce- unless I decide on something quicker as kitchen is freezing.Going to get DH to help me print out all the cheap meal recipes over the weekend to give me a few more ideas.

He went to Lidl yesterday for seed potatoes and came back with three fruit trees, wooden raised bed and new door handles for the house :D.

We really need new door handles as we keep getting trapped because the old ones won't turn properly.Never thought of them as a prep but they were a third of the price we had expected so very pleased. Seem to have done nothing but spend money since we moved house but it has all been things we needed so trying not to get down about it.

Yay! I have found you guys again! :) I rather lost track of you when you went to the Arms, but I am so glad you are back "where you belong" :)

After Christmas I decided I had to do something about the grocery bill. There is only me and hubby in the house, and three pusscats, and I was spending £80 or so PER WEEK! It was horrendous. I was just buying the same old things time and again without thinking. Well, in January, I decided to get with the programme and went to the newly opened local Aldi. It's great. I am now averaging £35 per week for food and we are eating better!

LOve the idea of living simply. I am trying to get that way myself, and will dig out the other thread suggested on here.

    See you round folks!

1- Nope cant do that one yet sadly - 10 points off for being a fashion victim :rotfl:

    2. Been there done that scoffed em :D

    3. Right pens and pads at the ready

Turn grill on to full and a hob ring on medium. Prepare all ingredients before hand to save time. Place in small bowls for ease.
Carefully open a can of haricot beans in tomato sauce (some people call them baked beans) taking care not to spill the juice.
Place beans in a medium saucepan (modern people may choose to use the microwave)
Place two slices of white sliced bread under the grill and grill to your preferred colour - I like a lightish brown but I know some chefs prefer the darker hue.
Meanwhile simmer the baked beans until nicely warmed through (dont boil or they will spoil)
Lightly butter the toast and pour the beans over taking care to cover both pieces.
Season and serve with a nice chilled vodka and red bull
    :)

I think sometimes you have to 'spend to save'
    eg
My breadmaker has paid for itself and I stock up on yeast/flour etc when on special so the loaves work out dirt cheap

Slowcooker makes cheaper cuts into a lovely meal, makes stock easily and cheaply etc

Raised beds our new raised beds have produced a prolific amount this past year enough in produce to have already paid for themselves (I bought from Lakelands in their sale)

Greenhouse This was a luxury item last year but has proved to be a great investment as it'll probably outlast me and every year I had to replace our blowaway ones!
The increase in crops just last year alone has paid back around £120 pf the outlay already.
