Any AOL users? anyone else got this problem?

We use AOL and my Daughter just sent me an email which containted an attachment of her CV.
I tried to open it to save it in my documents ready to print and i got this message.

Unable to scan attachment(s)

The attached file(s) had not been scanned becuase it may be password protected or corrupted.(tell me more)

Please click to continue

If you click on tell me more it says this...

AOL could not scan the file attachment(s). They may be password protected or corrupted, or we may be temporarily unable to scan attachments. Because the file(s) have not been scanned, we do not know if the file(s) have a virus. We recommend that you proceed with caution.

To check whether it is just my computer i sent her an email back and attached a photo. She got the same message.

I just wondered if anyone is experiencing this as well? It was ok yesterday when i downloaded some photos of my Niece.

She sent 2, one was a docx and the other a jpg image.

edit that...Actually it is doing it with anything saved as doc too.

Anyone got any ideas? My daughter is on her laptop downstairs signed into AOL and it is doing it with anything sent as an attachment to her. Could it just be a problem with AOL at the moment?

What happens if she zips them up?
  • Nope even a zipped file it is doing it.

I really don't understand, i received an email yesterday from a hotmail address, i opened the attachment fine and downloaded all the photos.
I have just deleted the zip file that containted them photos and clicked on the email to download them again and it let me ok. I didnt get any unable to scan attachment pop up.

It seems to be mail sent from one AOL account to another AOL account as my Daughter is having the same problem

I am beginning to think it is high time i left AOL altogether, nothing but problems lately.

Can i just ask if anyone knows, when i log onto the internet i do so from AOL9.1 and surf the web on their homepage. I have Avast anti-virus and i just wondered if my aol email would still be scanned with avasts mail shield?
  • I am not too sure what you mean when you say hoover over the document.

It's still doing it today although i wonder if it has something to do with my AOL account in general.

It's my account and both my Daughters have screen names linked to my account. If they send me an email with an attachment or vice versa no matter what it is (and we have tried loads) we all get the pop up box from AOL to say the attachment could not be scanned although we are all in the same house.
I might see what happens when my Daughter goes back to Uni, i'll try and send her an email with an attachment and see if she can download there without getting the pop up box.

I don't know anyone else with AOL who is not linked to my account to see if they can download stuff sent by me.

I have had an email through this morning from a friend (non AOL user) that had an attachment and i could download that just fine.

It's more annoying than anything although to be honest myself and my children very very rarely send emails to each other with attachments in and none of my friends or contacts have AOL anyway.
  • Right it's defintely either my AOL account or AOL to AOL emails.

I just sent an email from my email address to my email address and attached a pdf file that i have saved in my documents. The email sent ok but when i clicked on the attachment to download it i got the box telling me that the attachment could not be scanned.

    Bloody AOL

No not "Hoover", but "Hover", lol
(just place the mouse over the attachment without clicking)

You could be right about the problem being related to sub-accounts,
i can't really test that, my tests were done from separate AOL accounts.

and since your other incoming mail appears to be ok, it looks unlikely to be an issue with Avast.

It would be interesting if you or your daughter had a Gmail address (for instance) and sent you an email from her pc (just using jpegs as attachments, not .docs), to see if that arrived without any warnings.

Well it is doing it with everything now. My sister sent me a word doc from her blueyonder email account and the same thing happened.

Just telephoned AOL and they haven't a clue by the sounds of it, said it is likely to be a server problem which should sort itself out.

He said to save the attachment and then scan it using my anti virus. How the hell do i do that. If i click on the attachment i get the pop up message warning me and then asking if i would like to continue and if i just hover over it (sorry thought you said hoover lol) then it just tells me the whole attachment title.

I'm baffled. Wont be opening any attachment for while that for sure.

Am I right in saying you're accessing your emails via the AOL (joke of a) browser? If so just try logging into your email account via Internet Explorer or Firefox and see if the same problem happens, there isn't really any need for AOL software on your pc.

Or downloading your emails through an email client like Outlook/Thunderbird etc?

Edit: I just sent a .pdf and a doc to an old aol.co.uk email address of mine from a Gmail account and no problems.

I am very embarrased to say that yes i am accessing my emails through the AOL browser, i have come to quite like my AOL homepage :embarasse

I have done exactly as you said and logged into my email account through internet explorer and hey presto it's fine. If i hover over the attachment it say 27k no viruses found (or something like that) if i try that on the AOL browser then i just get the whole title of the attachment.

Must definately be an AOL problem then for those who are foolishly still using the AOL browswer.

Time for a change of provider i think.

I presume you didn't use AOL's browser to open the email? i think that is the problem as as i said above i have no problems if i log into my email account through internet explorer.
