Iphone Query (Airplane Mode)

I am going to the US in a couple of weeks and wondered if I put my phone in airplane mode for the duration, would it allow any form of data connection? IE i don't want to come home and have a massive bill, but i want to be able to use the camera and the ipod feature....and if there is a free wifi hotspot, connect to that to check emails

would that be an easy solution? I have seen several threads on here with people going abroad and switching off 3g etc but still having big bills..i would have thought airplane mode be the obvious and easiest choice to avoid this?

Yes but people generally would want to make and receive calls which you can't do in aeroplane mode. You could call your provider to put a cap on your bill charges so if you do go over your call limit you will know the maximum charge. You may not be able to use the phone but you wont get a nasty bill on your return.

i don't want to use the "phone facilities" - just the camera and ipod bit, and like i said if there is a free wifi hotspot that i can hop onto for 5 mins

  • I would expect it not to use any radio connection, including wi-fi in airplane mode. Wired connections (by USB) may work.

    Hi hmd,

This is fairly simple on the iPhone. Turn Airplane Mode on in settings, this will disable all the data and phone calls including text messages to the phone. Then enable go into Wi-Fi settings and turn this back to on. This way you can use any wireless hotspots but won't get any roaming charges. Its worth making a note to switch the Wi-Fi back to off once your done to conserve battery life if that's important to you.

To be double'y sure you won't get any charges accidentally, make sure Data Roaming is turned off in Network Settings. That way if you accidentally turn your phone back on you won't be stung. The default setting is normally off anyway but best to check!

You could take the sim card out, that way you can still use WiFi, etc but be sure you're not getting any charges (not 100% this works on iPhone but it certainly does for some other smartphones)

ALL radio functionality is disabled when "Aeroplane Mode" is enabled on any mobile phone, the whole idea being that there are no radio transmitters that could possibly interfere with the planes navigation/flight control systems.

Go into your settings, then general and finally network. You'll see a slider for data roaming. Slide it to off and you'll still be able to make and recieve calls and use wifi, but the phone wont recieve or send data over the local network. I use my Iphone in this mode all the time when abroad and dont get any unexpected charges for data transfer. You will of course get charged for making and receiving phone calls however :)

Airplane mode will turn off all radio and wifi signals. To log onto a wifi network, you need to disable airplane mode. Certain apps will look for a data connection so you can end up paying a fortune over a carrier network. I made this mistake once and £15 credit went in a few days.

I stopped this by making it impossible for it to connect to a data network except wifi. Go to settings, General, Network and turn off cellular data. Then turn data roaming off. Finally, go to cellular data network and the APN alter the .co.uk to .qwe or something like that to make it impossible to connect to the data network. When you want it back on, change it back to .co.uk and turn data back on.
