I thought the first time a contactless card was used for a contactless transaction it forces a PIN request? I don't know if they all work this way, but it gives the customer a choice whether to enable PIN-less transactions on their card or not.
In practice this may be undermined by shops that insist transactions under £15 are done contactless where the card has that facility.0 -
I can't wait for this technology to be widespread, I tried it in london and it worked flawlessly. Interesting that it didn't ask for a pin even though it was the first time I'd used it in months.
If we listened to all the technophobes there'd never be any developments in technology. Moaning for the sake of it, as the bank refunds any transactions that weren't done by you.0 -
same people walk about with lead jackets on and tin foil hats.0

Yes thats true, but they can be cloned as well as read. The second video along proves how darn easy it is also.

I'm taking on board both sides of the debate but heres an example of a scenario i'm afraid may happen.
Ok, someone manages to read my card, from what i've seen on youtube & American news channels, this seems to be very easy to do with basic equipment thats readily available. After reading my card they proceed to carry out 5 transactions up to the current maximum allowed of £15, equating up to £75, before my bank ask for a PIN for further transactions. In the meantime, i'm not aware of this so head out, make a PIN transaction, resetting the PINless contactless transaction authority for someone to carry on using. Ok, this may sound a worse case sceanario but with any fraudulent transactions, the bank can insist on the customer paying the 1st £50 of any reported fraudulent transactions. So i could in effect be out of pocket by at least £50. With my card also being a Barclaycard & majority of customer services being outside of the UK, i'm just not convinced that i would get satisfactory assistance in the event of fraud. Yes i could buy a protective wallet that is supposed to prevent my card from being read without permission but the point i'm trying to make is i don't trust the technology, i don't want it all for the sake of saving a few seconds at the checkout but Barclays have no interest in anything but forcing it onto consumers.
Someone also can come to your house and shot you and still take all your money :rotfl:
I have to say I really hate those people who is theoretically afraid of everything they even haven’t tried. If the world has mostly consisted of such people we would still haven’t invented fire and wheel.
The biggest barrier of contactless technology in the UK is something called ‘minimum card payment’, I’ve tried to buy a bottle of water in LA Fitness using Barkleycard but been told that I have to spend minimum £5, so the whole thing is quite pointless, but the idea is brilliant!0 -
It's often early adopters that pay the most and have the most problems. These pioneers receive little reward except sometimes prestige in the eyes of their friends.
PS fire wasn't invented!!0 -

I don't know what you've heard, and to be fair I was a little reluctant to get a barclaycard (maybe that was an historical issue?)
Anyway, I did actually end up with one and have had it for a few years after they took over another business.
I've not had to contact their customer services much, but when I have, my experience was comparativley good
Much better than a recent contact I made with Tesco Bank over my credit card with them

By any chance do you work for Barclays? Don't want the technology, have no intention of using it.0
