Makes sense I guess. Might be a bit of a hassle, but if the bank are aware you're abroad it avoids them locking out your card or whatever.0

I'd have no problem with this -better alternative than the now standard card blocking that happens every time I go to the US. It has got to the point I now try to predict which transaction will trigger it rather than wonder if it will happen.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole
MSE Florida wedding .....no problem0 -
Seems like a good idea to me. HSBC have a similar travel notification system on their online banking - though at the moment it is still optional.
Had my HSBC credit and debit card blocked in the US once. Fortunately I had another card from a different bank as an emergency backup otherwise I would have been screwed.0 -
Note that the Nationwide still won't guarantee that they won't block your card even if you do tell them.0

I used my gold card in Phnom Penh and Khao Lak with no problems and didn't tell them I was going there.Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0

Well, that's the thing. You can tell them and they can still cancel your card - or you can tell them nothing and you may be fine. It's just that informing your bank reduces the risk of your cards being blocked, so for the sake of a 5 minute phone call or a few clicks online it is worth doing.
It's quite right that they won't guarantee that your card will not be blocked. If I lost my card in Bangkok and someone used it to book a first class one way ticked to Los Angeles then I'd expect it to raise an alert in their system.0 -
Haven't used my NW credit or debit cards overseas since they introduced charges - only keep the debit card/account to fund a Caxton Euro card (keeps the HSBC current account 'one step away').
Haven't had a problem with the Halifax Clarity so far (only had it for 6 months) - not needed to set up holiday plans etc. I usually set up the HSBC 'going on hols' stuff just in case, but haven't needed to use it so far.0
