It is called sarcasm, I was simply stating that you can never please everyone. Some people whinge because they have to notify their bank about using their card abroad, when really they do not realise the reason behind yet - however the same people tend to be the first to complain and whinge when their account has been cloned and used abroad and the bank has done nothing about it.

I was not getting at you personally, I made the comment about foreign currency/travel cheques to avoid paying bank charges. Also you should take a variety of payment methods with you anyway, what if your card gets retained by the ATM or your wallet gets stolen?

Doesn't matter anymore, as I have finally closed my FlexAccount.

Me too - closed it last week. I was a big fan of Nationwide for years but they took away every reason I had to stay with them.

(I used to use my FlexAccount as my main account too, so I wasn't one of the "only use it abroad" people they wanted rid of.)
  • I worked @ NW for 6 months last year. They never had a process in place to allow customers to inform us of when they were going abroad. We actually had mystery shop calls as people were placing notes on accounts off the back of emails or calls that would never be read and cards would still be blocked.

If your card were to be blocked then usually a fruad analyst would check your account within a few hours. In some cases unblock the card if they could see you were clearly abroad and keep the block if they thought there was something odd. We always had to advise on procedures to make the process as simple as possible if your card were to be blocked. For instance doing a balance check at departures and arrivals. This way an analyst can easily see a flight has been taken.
  • i guess a useful security feature if someone were to spend a lot of amounts abroad

I rang Nationwide in mid-Dec to ask if they needed info and the answer was, as usual, 'No, we never need to know'.

I then used my Flexaccount debit card in W Africa from then up to the end of last month with no problems.

I went to Dubai in August last year and my card didn't work - luckily my AMEX card did but very frustrating trying to get cash out of an ATM to pay for a taxi!! Phone Nationwide from Dubai and my card was unblocked - sent them a letter when back home regarding call costs and was refunded.

I travel abroad on a daily basis and this is definitely not practical for me.

    Bye Bye Nationwide.
