Nationwide now need your travel details if using their cards abroad!

I know there will be far less members using Nationwide cards abroad now. I am using mine as back up and have given them my travel arrangements.

Extract from Nationwide website -

"FlexAccount - Going Abroad If you're travelling abroad, please complete the online travel notification form. The form enables you to list up to 10 destinations within 12 months of your departure date and could help reduce the chance of your card being restricted if we detect unusual spending patterns.
How to notify us online

To notify us, sign on to the internet bank and:
  1. Select the My Accounts tab - located at the top of the page
  2. Select the FlexAccount you'll be using overseas - link within the Accounts List
  3. Select Other Services - from the menu on the left side of the page
  4. Select Travel Notifications - under the heading Miscellaneous
  5. Read the information & select continue
  6. Enter your travel destination(s) - from the dropdown list provided
  7. Enter dates - from the dropdown list provided
  8. Select Add - located at the bottom of the page"

The option has been there on online banking for some time.
Doesn't really mean anything. If you don't inform them it doesn't mean you can't use your cards abroad.

I do not mind the above procedure. My gripe is the withdrawal of free overseas card usage.

    Beware off not informing Nationwide.
They blocked my card and I was in Disney s Animal Kingdom, Africa and in the bar. Could not believe it when the bartender told me it had bounced. Very embarrassing.
Upshot was I rang Nationwide from the bar. It had been stopped for 'unusual spending'. Bank teller then found my email telling them I would be in the states for six weeks and she apologized but it would take 24 hrs to clear the card.
Up shot was that the telephone call cost £34.70 which I refused to pay [already had because it was on a debit card] but I did get it back from Nationwide but it took 4 months.

. . . . and you wanna try and tell 'em that you're touring. Nope, that's right their notification form doesn't allow you to do this. I've swopped a number of emails with NW and eventually, quite frustrated, went to my "local" branch of 4+ miles away told the staff there of the difficulty and their advice? "No need to let us know, the worse that will happen is that your card will be blocked and then you can ring us for it to be unblocked"?! Pretty sure it isnt me :(

Really? They did mine at a touch of a button (after passing all the security questions) and my card was working again.

Doesn't matter anymore, as I have finally closed my FlexAccount.

Well take foreign currency/travel cheques/travel card with you and don't use your card then.

As for informing a bank that you are planning on using your account abroad I think it's an excellent idea. No doubt you would be more than happy if your account card had been cloned and monies were being taken out in foreign countries and the bank could not care less.....

I never stated you didn't, just advising ways of avoiding paying the charges that you would pay by using a card abroad.

Bearing in mind that I do not mind the notification procedure what gave you the idea that I would not mind having my card cloned. Clearly you are not well.:rotfl:
