Investment to replace insurance?

I don't believe in breakdown insurances and insurance against emergency plumbming disasters etc. but I would like to invest a small amount per month to cover myself for such emergencies.
Would an ordinary savings account do, or is there something better such as a long-term policy? Bearing in mind that this would be a life-long commitment to save a small amount each month as I will always need access to some money if something expensive and unforseen occurred.

If you are not currently using your ISA allowance then a cash ISA might be a good idea, i otherwise an on line accounts with the likes of ING who offer a good rate of interst might be worth a look.
