Neff Microwave - incorrectly installed?

I called out a Neff service engineer to repair my Neff builtin microwave oven which has completely stopped working. I have paid £85 and been left with an estimate for £392 which included new power and control modules. The engineer noted that the microwave had not been installed as per installation instructions as there is no air gap at the base of the unit. I have contacted the kitchen installers who have responded by saying that as the microwave was installed in 2005 there were no regulations requiring an air gap so it is not their responsibility and they are trying to sell us another appliance! I find this hard to believe as we still have the neff installation instruction leaflet and it clearly shows that there should be am 18mm Gap. Do you think that I have any comeback on them? Thank you

I think if it's taken six years for you to notice, then it would be pretty hard to argue your case.
  • Did you buy the microwave from the installers in the first place?

If you did just tell them it is their responsibility to install to the manufacturers instructions.

Then be prepared to move on.

  • Thank you Dander, I would have no reason to notice until the microwave packed up.

1984Returns for real - I bought a new house from a builder, they used a kitchen installer to fit the kitchen and the appliances.
  • Built in Neff microwaves are £250 on ebay.

I would think you certainly have a comeback on them, the date of fitting is irrelevant, if the manufactures installation instructions state there should be an 18mm air gap then they have not fitted if to the correct specifications.

Apart from that I would have thought that any experienced kitchen fitter should have known that air gaps are required around built in microwaves.
  • Thank you for the replies. We will draft a formal complaint letter to the Kitchen Installer (are we allowed to name them here?). If that doesn't work might contact citizen's advice bureau.

I suspect you don't want to know what I have to say because you're looking for confirmation of your own opinion, but surely, if the builder of the house contracted the kitchen installers then your complaint would have to be with the builder of the house. They are who YOUR contract is with. Also, why not give consumer direct a call before you start writing letters - they'll be much better placed than anyone on an internet forum to tell you exactly what your rights are in this. http://www.consumerdirect.gov.uk/

We had problems with 2 neff microwaves that we purchased. After about 14 months it packed up and got a quote to get it repaired - as much as a new one. Purchased a new one and it packed up again just outside the warranty. We had the required gap though. Decided not to go for another neff and have chosen a cda microwave. Have had no problems with this one so far - it is well over a year old. Did post our problems previously on mse. Other people had not been pleased with how long their neff mw had lasted if i recall rightly.
