Santander, question about debts

Hi,

I have debt with a bank who is now under Santander, my new bank is also under this company but i joined this bank before they all came under Santander.

Can they take funds from my bank to cover the debt with the other one? As it is after all, the same company now?

I will eventually clear off the debt as much as i can, just trying to get sorted. Started to clear off another debt which feels good.

Thanks.

Yes they can like RBS can with Natwest and vice versa.

Thank you. Wouldn't they need my authorisation to do this? is there any way to prevent it from happening in the future?

They can just do it without authorisation from you, under 'right of set off' or whatever the cobblers phrase is.

Only way to prevent this is to put your savings with another provider that is not affiliated with the same institution.

Example, overdraft with Natwest, Savings with Chelsea Building Society would be safe.

  • I think the only way to stop it is to close your account, open another one with a totally different bank and set up a repayment plan with Santander.

Bit of a bump, got refused a Natwest step account i was under the impression that they didn't do any check apart from ID?

I did list my new house where i'm not on the electoral roll, but also gave them the old address where i am on it, would this of made a difference?

You might want to try for:

    Nationwide Cash Account
    Co-Operative Cashminder

    They aren't so strict :)
    Cashback Earned ¦ Nectar Points £68 ¦ Natoinwide Select £62 ¦ Aqua Reward £100 ¦ Amex Platinum £48

Appreciate that, will give them a try. Hear Co-op is really good.

And strangely, i 'just' received a text from natwest saying my debit card is on its way? That kinda goes against what the declined letter this morning says. Sigh.

Ok, this is odd. I received a welcome letter from Natwest today telling me my account is now open along with my pin/account no. Also an r85 tax form.

But as above, the first letter i got was telling me they'd declined it, then i got the welcome text & now this.

I phoned Natwest & nothing was coming up, she told me that i should wait for my card & they'll be able t see the account... :\

    Any ideas.
