virgin slow speeds

Hi there i hope some can help me out here.

i have with virgin media now for 6 months on broadband on there 10mb speed.

i have noticed recently that my internet speed has dropped from 9,70mb down to 3mb speeds on speed tests.

when im downloading a new things the speed are down speed 10 kb/s and up speed are 30kb/s, i have contacted virgin and they said there is no problems in the area.

i only down load 2 small films a week, just surfing the net for info.

Am i throttling virgin or are they capping me.

What can i do as i dont want to up grade my service.

thanks nick

  • They throttle for sure, earlier it was measuring 9.8ish, right now it's 5.2ish.

Fog on The Tyne isn't mine all mine... but if I wanted it, I'd want it with a discount code.

I'm assuming you are on the cable service? If so,was it installed by a VM installer or a self install?

You could do that just fine with less than 1mb never mind the 3mb you say you are getting.

Definitely a fault somewhere (although not necessarily with Virgins network).
  • VM installer installed it still slow, seems to speed up at mid day.
  • Use the "Device Manager" on your PC to get the model number of the modem unless it's obvious (e.g. make/model printed on the bottom) then a quick trawl of the internet should find you the means of getting into the statistics pages for the modem and the one which could be the culprit is the "Power Level", I think - parents had similar situation - 10Meg for years, then dropped to dial-up speeds.

If you can get that info, suggest doing what I did - register on Virgin's website forums for cable, post the statistics from the router and describe the issue. There's a "sticky topic" in there which suggests what info to post.

In my case I did that on behalf of my parents, gave them the account number via private message and two days later someone popped round, replaced their old modem, sorted out their power levels (I wonder why these drop after being set originally - bet Spike knows) and all was well again.
