Help with Skype

Hope someone can help. When I go into Skype my microphone is showing as muted and I cannot unmute it. I have just downloaded the latest version of Skype and it is exactly the same. Have tried help section tried googling the problem and still got nowhere. I am expecting a call from someone overseas later today and need to fix it quickly but I have no idea how.

On Skype, go to Tools - Options - Audio settings, and check if you have the right mic selected:)
Also test by calling Echo/Sound test service.
  • Thanks for replies - have tried all these options - no luck. Only have one microphone available to select. By googling seems to be a common problem but no answer how to fix it

I found this Googling, worth a try?:

    1. Audio settings all versions

    Skype:
Skype-->Main window…..>Tools -> Options -->Sound Devices-->audio device/USB/etc Audio Device (do NOT use windows default device)
You can also tick the ring pc speaker check box as this is a good backup to alert you even
if the main speakers are off or turned down.

    Windows:
    Start-->Control panel-->Sound and Audio devices
On the audio tab set the default playback device to your main soundcard (AC97/Audio-chip/add-on-adapter), etc.
Your installed audio device must be present there.
    If not, reinstall audio device

2)Check if your micro (pink) and speaker (lime) jacks are really correct and fully inserted!
    They sometimes stuck.
For test only you can use earphone instead of microphone for Line In.
Standard micro in Line In will NOT work.
    Go to:
    Start
    Programs
    Accessories
    Entertainment or go to
Volume Control; right click on loudspeaker icon in Task Tray
    Options
    Microphone
    Scroll down
    Check "Microphone"
If the bar "Microphone" is available, the microphone is detected by Windows now go on
(If not, Windows has a problem with your microphone)
Just to check if your microphone is broken or bad, you can use your headphones instead. They really work!
    Which one L or R is microphone now, I think it's L
    Check "Advanced properties"

    Check Micro "Advanced"
    Open
Check "20db boost" or "1.MIC boost" depending on language version
Volume level can be left in any position.
    Mute microphone!!!

    3. Check audio now on windows base.
    Start
    Programs
    Accessories
    Entertainment
    Soundrecorder

    4. Once done, test with Skype Test Call echo123.
  • Is it saying anything about sound card being undetected?
My dad had this the other day. We poked about with the audio settings and then seemed to be OK afterwards.
  • Thanks for that - tried everything but still not workinhg

Some motherboards do not show the microphone setting if it is not plugged in, or plugged in correctly.

When you get the mixer up go options, properties then see if there is a a choice of playback or recording option, go recording and select the microphone then ok then on the recording panel put a tick in select microphone box.

This is for XP, you did not say what your operating system is.
  • Thanks for trying to help - i am using Vista
  • I had the same problem recently. Have you used your web cam before now or is it a new one. I ask because I fitted a new one and the blurb on the box said "Make video calls straight away". Technically correct but there was no built in mic. Skype showed a muted mic and this obviously couldn't be changed. I believe in the tools/options/audio menu my sound card was selected as the mic source. Check your web cam for a mic.
