TalkTalk only LLU in my area - is it worth it!?

Hi,

I am currently on Orange as I get the BB free with my mobile contract. I now need an unlimited package so I am looking to move as Orange are expensive. The only LLU operator in my area is TalkTalk, it is good value and unlimited and much faster than what other operators can provide. They have quoted me 18.5 where as on Orange I get 6.5 (non LLU).

Is it really worth going to TalkTalk for this extra bandwidth? I have heard so many horror stories about them which are holding me back.

Thanks

    Hiya buttons

I have a TT line and I have to admit I'm a TalkTalk employee. Just a gentle note that I am not trying to sell you the product.. Everything I've put below is from my personal experience and also giving you some things to consider before you make your own decision.

I don't think TT has a worse rep than anyone else. People are so keen to complain but you genuinely don't find people praising companies that often do you?

I have had some good and some bad experiences as a customer. I never call in favours (As I think its bad practice personally) so I always follow the same path as every other customer. I have also been a Virgin and a BT customer in my time and the service I've had was no better or worse from them than with TalkTalk. Speed-wise Virgin was way faster for obvious reasons LOL !

Did you do a TalkTalk availability check? Might also be worth noting that it isnt a guaranteed speed. No speed can be confirmed until your line is "live". Reason for this is down to several things for example, how long your telephone line is to the exchange and the quality of the copper line you have.

Also check out the fair usage policy. Things may be unlimited but every provider has a fair usage policy. Also it depends on what kind of things you'll be doing with the service i.e. Gaming and perhaps P2P.. Check out the policy and terms and conditions properly on all of those things first as each service provider differs from the other and you may get extra/less than you thought by switching.

You need to do as much research as possible online.. especially about what speeds you are most likely to get. Good places to look are the think broadband forums (as its impartial) and the talktalkmembers forum. Only you know if this will be the right product for you. LLU (through any provider) is much much better than non LLU as you know. Also it does allow better management of triple/quad play services (i.e IPTV etc) so def worth looking into.

Make sure the only option you have is through a BT line (for example have you checked out Virgin?)

There is an official TalkTalk Rep on here who may be able to answer an indepth questions you have about the stories you've heard in particular.. they are usually one of the MODs from the TalkTalk members site though.

    Good luck.
  • I've been on Talktalk LLU for nearly 6 months now and it's about a Zillion times better than a IP stream (BT) service. I get 17 meg speed ALL THE TIME. Talktalk do traffic shape but it's only P2P traffic they shape and even then it's dynamic shaping...depends on exchange capacity at the time. Customer support over phone isn't good but their web forum staff are very helpful. I highly recommend them provided you don't use P2P a lot. Very good for gaming (my ping is 15 ms average) and also superb for video streaming :)
  • Thanks for your feedback, I am going to go for it as it is only going to cost me £7 a month more than I pay now and I will have faster, unlimited downloads. The deal is half price for 12 months so hopefully at the end of the 12 months my exchange will have been upgraded or have more LLU choices.

I too am on Talk Talk LLU , not the high speeds you guys have - but near on 2mbs when both BT and Virgin could only manage 512kbs.

Their call centre support is dire ( as they all are) but the forum team are excellent.

Ive had two days outage in 18 months and one week of the line going down the same time every night for an hour.

I dont download much P2P so dont notice any throttling in speed. |

For me its a good service at a very good price

I find the forum team excellent and you can often find helpful background to your problem by reading the posts of other members who have experienced the same trouble.

Agreed - telephone call centre support is not good, but TT encourage you to use the forums anyway.

    Oh yes it has!!!!!

Agree with previous comments that the call centres are pants.....their only objective is to stop you taking up the valuable time of someone who knows something, even though they no nothing other than whats on the script, and probably cant help you themselves.
