yes its easy to put one in, i bought a 650watt psu brand new from a seller via ebay for £21, tools you will need, 1 star screwdriver, patience
    link to seller, http://shop.ebay.co.uk/fly768/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p3686
    1. remove the side panel from the pc
    2. remove the connection to dvd/cd drive, hdd and floppy, remove the big connection to the motherboard.
    3. remove the 4 screws on the rear of the pc case which holds in the PSU.
    4. remove the PSU from the case.
    5. insert the new psu in the case and using the same 4 screws, screw it in.
    6. connect the big 20/24 pin connector to the motherboard. You may need to split the connector its a 20+4 pin, depending on your motherboard and its simply got a bit of tape around the 4pins, remove the tape and the 4pin connector will come away.
    7. connect the power connections onto the floppy, hdd and dvd.
    8. plug in the power lead from the mains and turn on the computer
    9. put the side back on if everything is working and screw the last 2/3 screws in place.

BE CAREFUL - some Dell PCs don't use standard ATX power supplies... They might use the same motherboard connector for example but I know from experience some are wired differently!

Happy ending... a very nice man who I met via Freecycle (I gave him OH's old laptop last year) came and replaced my PSU. His brother had the same PC as me and so he used his old PSU and replaced mine... Obviously his brother no longer uses his PC, he didn't just nick it without asking:rotfl::rotfl:.

Thank you everyone for your help.
