Power supply needs replacing

According to the IT bod I know, my power supply on my desktop needs to be replaced.

Can anyone recommend a good one for a Dell Dimension 3000 please?

Thanks.

Firstly I changed the fuse on the plug. The PC still wouldn't start, then he got me to put the cable from the unit into the monitor, the lights came on then, so he thinks it might be the power supply.

When you turn pc on do you get anything at all on the screen?
Did you get a beep when starting up your pc before this problem and are you getting any beeps when trying now ?

Dimension 3000 power supply is standard- ATX 2 250-300w should be ok

Just the monitor light and briefly something about it being a Dell. Nothing from the unit though.

    No beeps.
    Thanks.

It sounds like you've got a competent IT bod there so it is most likely the PSU. You can buy then for around £15 so its worth a go.

Thanks. I was wondering which one was good, as there are quite a few around.

The thing from Dell is from the unit, specifically what does it say, and does it then go blank and machine switches off, or remains switched on?

does the cd drawer eject if you press the button?

To test the psu, Unplug the PSU from inside the PC, take all the plugs out of the motherboard etc.

Shorting the green pin to a black on on the big 20+ pin connector should start the PSU fan running if its working.
if it does not come on the remove the short pdq.

Most computer shops are likely so have a PSU test set round the back.

The Dell thing is on the monitor, ie when I switch the monitor on it flashes up saying Dell. I can't read what it says as it's too quick. The light on the monitor remains on.

It's the unit that does not work. No lights, so can't open the CD drive or anything.
