How to find parent after 20 odd years of no contact?

I've not had anything to do with my dad since he walked out on my mum when I was a teenager. My mum made sure we all hated him and had nothing to do with him going forward.

I'm kind of curious now not really sure why, but I thought I would have a google for his name to see what I could find. I can't find a thing.

I can't remember his date of birth, just know it was late January, I only really know his name, can't remember his parents names, they died when I was little. I have no contact with any family nor my mum any more. I'm pretty much all alone apart my partner and my son. Quite sad really thinking about it today.

Anyway, I wondered if there were any free sites that may be able to help me search. Everything that comes up seems to be wanting money.

I don't think I want to contact him deep down, but wondered what happened to him.

All I do know is that he remarried and did have another child, neither names I know.

Thanks for any pointers.

Have you checked looked for a copy of your parents marriage certificate? That will have his date of birth.. knowing where they married helps and you can get a birth certificate from that and so date of birth then check electoral roles maybe? If you have a vague idea where he lived this might be easier

Have a flick through sites such as friends/genes reunited it may well be he or another member of his family is listed there and can make contact?

  • Just looked on genes reunited, think I've found him under marriages, but you have to pay to view any more info, not wanting to pay really as I'm not even sure what other info it will give .

Married again 1994 in Wellingborough is all I've found out.

I believe the Salvation Army may help, although i have no personal experience of this.
  • Don't pay Tillycat while there are people on here with access to GR and Ancestry who will look stuff up for you. I've got both if you would like to PM me.

My first thought is that he may have more children and those children may well be on Facebook. I've found FB a useful way of finding the current generation.

    Cheers

  • PS you won't get a date of birth on a marriage certificate - you'll get an age, whcih will be what the person told the person registering the marriage. That might not be right...

You will be able to get the GRO reference numbers from websites but you will need to buy the certificate to find out the details.

Mrs P P's idea of looking for half-siblings is a good one. It's usually possible to trace the children of a marriage and you can look for them on FB and other sites.
