Puppy with "Cherry Eye"

We are due to pick up a puppy in the coming weeks but have been informed by the owner that the pup has developed a cherry eye.

From reading the advice on the web it seems a common problem with the breed but I'm after some advice on what to do. The breeder has offered money off and we are taking the pup the vets at the weekend to get fully checked out but i'd welcome any advice you lot may have, i.e. should we still go ahead with the purchase, what sort of cost would it be to put the cherry eye right etc.

We have grown very attached the past couple of weeks with the breeder allowing us to visit as often as we like, its just about making a decision with our hearts or our head.......

    Hi there.

Is it a Chihuahua? My mum's puppy had cherry eye, it had a little operation to temove it when he was about 6 months, that was in Australia so i don't know how much it cost her. When she came back here to live she took him to the vet for a check up, the vet said he may need an op in the other eye as it has a little bit of cherry in it, they are seeing how it goes. She wasn't at all worried that he might need another op as it was a straightforward procedure.

Perhaps you could ask a few vets how much the op will be and ask the breeder to reduce the price by that amount.

From my mum's experience with it it's certainly not something to put you off taking the pup altogether, especially as you've grown attached to it.

Its a Lhasa Apso which seems to be in the group of the most affected breeds with this problem

Remember too that as its a pre existing condition it wont be covered on insurance ( unless the breeder had it covered before diagnosis) so you will pay for this op and any furture ops

I would ask the breeder that you would be allowed to take the pup to the vet of your choice to discuss what ops will be needed and a ball park figure and then get a substantial discount in price
  • Hi

My Mum's puppy (American cocker spaniel) had cherry eye last year in both eyes, and the operation cost around £400.

Slightly different condition, but my pup had Entropion - the OP cost £1200. Do check with a vet before purchasing the pup.

Is cherry eye an hereditary disease?

Its not a disease, its a prolapse of the third eye lid

Any pup can develop its but dogs that are known to have doopy eyes are more prone - cockers, bulldogs, shar peis etc
  • A couple of hundred quid off in exchange for an uninsurable animal, and no consequences for the breeder having failed with their line.

I can't say that it is a fair swap.

Our pup (shar pei) has just had an entropion op on both eyes and it cost £300 with all the antibiotics etc in total.
There is a huge difference in what some vets charge for this op(Viktory I was shocked at your price, think I'd have fainted if they told me that much) so its worth doublechecking with your vet how much the op will cost.

On her claim form it does ask when the condition started and if it was a pre-existing condition when we bought her (we're with Virgin)

Its been a tough week for her as her stitches on one eye had to be redone but the eyes look great now and hopefully won't have to be done again.

I suppose its a case of wether you can afford the op and any further ones if you decide to go ahead.

Stop scaremongering! It's not an 'uninsurable animal', the puppy can be insured for everything else, except for the cherry eye condition. A good insurance company will exclude the condition only and will even cover the eyes for any unrelated conditions. The OP will need to do their research though regarding the cost of the uninsured condition, which they have started doing here.

OP I would pop into your own vets tomorrow and have a chat with them, they should be able to give you an idea of cost as it will vary from area to area, and they should also be able to give you some idea of what continued problems you can expect with it.
