High electric use!!

Morning all :)

I have read that the average electric use for a studio/1 bed flat is between 9-12 kWh

I was shocked as on checking my meter I am using 34 kWh a day!

The flat is rented and I think it is the old electric central heating unit that zapping all the power.

Anything I can do (other than not use it)? Would my landlord be obliged to upgrade this?

Help would be most appreciated :o

No your LL has no obligation to upgrade it. I assume you are on an E7 tariff so I would note how much you are using on the day rate and the night rate to see how the 34kwh is split.

    Are the heaters set correctly?

  • It has two modes on and off! its straight off of the arch! it barley get warm and takes for ever just to heat up a little. I have checked the e7 and I hardly use the 2nd rate lucky if i hit 2 kwh over night.

I have checked everything and its def the central heating. i unpluged everything the other day and just left that on and it used 23 kwh its just so un efficient
  • oh and its not as if this thing is on all day it only runs for about 5 hours!

    Hi dh010010,

I replied to your thread yesterday.

spiro is spot on, the best thing to do is see how much of this you are using on the night rate and how much on the day.

I know you have had a problem with the key and the tariff on your meter was 0, so it may be worth checking the tariff with E.ON when you call for your new key, make sure it is E7 if that is what would be best.

Increased usage like this is normally due to having electric heating I'm afraid, so ensure you are using it correctly and check it is set up to be as efficient as possible.

Shout up if you need any more info.

Oh just seen this post :o

Then it sounds like the E7 is not the best tariff to be billed on, you may want to change this to a one rate.

E.ON can change this for you, just ask.

  • Hi Helena I spoke with e-on yesterday and they have advised to use my olf edf key for the time being to reset the meter (which worked) and they are getting a new key out to me. (thanks for you help on that)

My point was that the centeral heating is not efficient, and would my landlord have an obligation to sort it? Its costing me a fortune! :o(

This bit wouldn't be anything to do with the supplier, I think spiro has posted a reply to this above and others may come along as well.

    Thanks

There is nothing 'only' about five hours per day. You are not going to use 12 kWh per day when the heating is on in a small flat. 34 kWh is perfectly reasonable. Average use will come down once you stop using the heaters.

This implies you heaters are on during the day. Storage heaters are designed to come on during the night to store heat which is then released during the day. They should be set to max input and min output. You should be using a large percentage of your elec overnight to compensate for higher days prices on E7.

I dont have storage heaters..... I have a very old central heating system (water/oil based)

3 radiators all connected one heats the water/oil and pumps it to all the other 2.

It doent matter what the thermostate is set to (high or low) it still uses the same amount of electricity but dosent get very warm.:(
