South Wales as a whole seems quite bad reading this thread. I'm certainly struggling trying to find a job here in Newport or over in Cardiff. It is getting very depresiing now.

I am fortunate enough to be working doing a job I really enjoy.

I dread to think how anyone who hasn't got a job feels when they have to get up in the morning

I am glad that I am only a dozen years away from retiring, but feel sick for my daughters, and my little grandson.

Ironic, that the idea of the future was everyone having more leisure time to do what they wanted...wasn't mentioned it was because no-one had a job...

I just checked the NI job centre and there has been 179 jobs added in the last 2 days, and they seem to be across a variety of areas
And given the size of NI I'd say around 50% of these are accessible from every area, so unless you live somewhere very obscure, I find it hard to believe there is only 1 job a week in your local area, unless of course you are limiting your local area to one town or village.

Are you registered with the recruitment agencies - for warehouse type work try Premiere People.

Saying that - I do understand what you mean, it took me about 6 months to find a new job, but there was jobs to apply for, and i did apply for them but just unsuccessfully!

Yes I limit myself to a 20 mile radius as I don't drive, and I'm sure others are the same in that if your low paid by the time you pay for public transport there is no point.

or the laughable 'meets national minimum wage' tag.

Is minimum wage not enough for you?
There's no sense crying over every mistake.
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

The minimum wage is useless, I work as it gets me out of the house, gives me a sense of worth, something to get up for, sad fact is though I'd be equally as well of on benefits as I'm sure alot of others are also.

I believe the Welsh valleys are on a par with the likes of Romania economically.

I once read in a report about Cornwall's economy that their economy (if unsupported by central govt) was the equivalent of Romanias. I can't source it now but it's scary stuff.

Where I live in Bournemouth isn't too bad. My boyfriend is job seeking and says he is struggling but he has only been looking since Mid January and we have different opinions on employment and what qualifies as a suitable job (me- ANYTHING!!! him- Something that is suitable for someone with his level of education an MA). I search for him though and there are quite a few jobs but competition is fierce. Like someone said abotu Tesco they opened 1 here a mont ago and had 100 applicants for each job. They also created lots of low hours p/t jobs rather than less f/t jobs. The Sainsburys I work at has an employment freeze until the end of this financial year and are therefore doing a lot more internal recruitment than normal!

I live in the South East, not far from Pfizers at Sandwich. The company that has just announced 2400 jobs are to go. So, pretty dire all told.

West Wales area (Ceredigion) and again dire! Searching JobCentre worksite it looks great until you realise that despite putting in a 40 mile radius the majority of the jobs are national franchising sales. Locally, all there is is care jobs or the occasional short hours (like 0 hours contract) retail work, and then some seasonal agricultural or tourist related work in the Spring/Summer.

I admit to being very, very worried for my kids (15 and 13) when they come to leave school. Even with qualifications there just doesn't seem to be any variety of work at all:(
